This post in another thread got me thinking..

If think if you look at what Godin is offering you can see Ovation was very ahead of the game. That's ALL I CAN SAY ABOUT THAT "Forrest Gump"

Lets list all of the innovations we can think of here with as much background as we know about them.

  • The first to bring decent active electronics into Production (Breadwinner).
  • Ovation's pickups. While many saw these as a mistake due to being a unique size, The Viper, Breadwinner and UKII pickups are some of the best pickups ever produced for guitar.
  • The UKII's non-magnetic rail design
  • Taking the Travis Bean to the next level and using a composite body (UKII)...
  • Thinking about ergonomics probably long before it was a common word
  • The bowl design (the shape)
  • The new bowl design (glass bead)
  • The Contour Bowl
  • Using a Vibrometer to measure the guitar tops and find the bast placement for bracing, sound holes and such.
  • The Acoustic/Electric guitar.

The multi-hole design.
Fibronic top on the Adamas.
Suspension Ring.
String feed through design of the bridge.
K-Bar.
LX neck with carbon fiber stiffeners.
OPP pickup.
Shimmed pickup/saddle assembly.
XLR output.
Phantom powered preamp.
Textured top.
Snot blob pickguard.

I'm not sure all of those were innovated by Ovation, so correct the list if wrong.

Aren't we going to run out of things to post here quick? Y'all got it covered for the most part in 2 posts. Did we mention the FET preamps? Synth pickups on an acoustic?

I think we take for granted some of the innovations.
We could even include some build innovations like:

  • using recycled fire hose pumped with air as a neck clamp.
  • Using suction (on the bowl) to hold the instrument in place while it goes through different stages of the build.
  • The goofy machine that has foot operated vacume plungers that hold the binding in place while being applied
  • using newsprint coated with glue between the neck and neck socket on the solid bodies making them something between a setneck and a bolton.
  • The tri-mount pickup

Using Bible verses or a Dollar Bill?

I thought that was an old trick?
And I thought that was for Luck...
and to make it easier to get them back apart.

Definitely on the Preacher.  But it was the Viper that started the whole damn mess.

Replaceable necks. Nice idea, anyway. A "BOON" for the BFLG.
