I wish this was my idea... well I guess it was and several others as well... but to have someone lend a credible signature to the project is what it really takes..

This isn't an endorsement, buyer beware, and all that... but I'm going to keep an eye on this site and their progress. It's long overdue and I hope it's successful.

Given the many thefts reported here over the years it IS a good idea. Our axes tend to be distinctive. Let's register!

The only thing that would hold me back is, if it's registered under my name, it's easy to go online and find out where I live. Then people would know where to go to steal it!

Unless it's like here where you use a screen name. I admit I didn't register there so I could find out.

"We can't actually keep your guitar under lock and
key but, if everyone knows you own it, perhaps
there's a better chance of keeping it safely
in your hands."

I really don't think I WANT everyone knowing what I own....

Dave Witko already has a 'register' over at ovationgallery.com.

The only part of that site Miles linked to that 'works' for me is the stolen guitars section. As the site grows, that section will need to be broken down into sub sections for brands/models.

Maybe the OFC could have a stolen Ovations section? A list instead of posts?

" if everyone knows you own it, "

Therein lies the problem. I doubt that is going to happen. Everyone is a lot of participation. And then you have the folks that register the guitar and then sell it and don't take it out of the registry...and someone wants to buy it from the 2nd or 3rd owner and they look at the registry and ...

Great concept

Pretty tough nut to crack to bring it to the scale that it would be practical and reliable.

What would be better is that pawn shops have a national public registry that all guitar make & serials are required to be entered in upon purchase or pawn.

I guess if you were to take the guitar brand and serial #, then googled it, and the "rightful" owner's name came up under GuitarVault, that could be useful. But if previous owners never took their name off the list, it would just gum up the works, and a righteous sales could be thwarted because of a f**kup.

jay, your idea about the pawn shops is right on the money. Most shops are honest, a few not so much. But it would certainly help!

I signed up and posted a Parker. The first one is free... I haven't decided yet to pay to post more. Interesting idea, however.

Cheers,

I share the concerns about this, or any registry, although I found out how easy it is to find me many years ago when Noah called me out of the blue. It doesn't make much sense to me to own a piece of art and keep it hidden. Same with guitars.

This thread at least prompted me to update my list of guitar gear that I started after SWMBO decided I had reached a point of no return. That was approximately the time that I could no longer say that all my Ovations cost less than my friend's single Taylor.
