Hi everyone, I've returned here after a couple of
years away. Basically I've sold my '93 collectors model (couldn't get used to the V neck) but can see another Ovation in my future.
My 10th and final guitar will be a 12 string.
Primarily I'll be unplugged, but I do a little home recording.
So if you have a Custom Legend or Custom Elite 12 string, what are you experiences?
Are they worth the extra cash or is the Balladeer the way to go?

Yeah, right!

The 1538 Elite is definitely worth the money. I like the idea of the off-center sound holes. I think it may be stronger...?
Unplugged, it is loud, loud, loud; and the sound and playability is sweetness itself!

Thanks OFC member to remain nameless. :)

I have played a number of Ovation 12's, from my shiny bowl Balladeer slothead, two Glen Campbell slotheads that I sold or traded, my 6759 Custom Legend that I recently sold...the 12's that I have kept are my two Custom Legend 1658 slotheads and my 1659 Custom Legend.

Only my opinion but the Custom Legend is the best of the best, whether slothead or standard headstock, whether played acoustic or plugged in. The deep bowl, AAA spruce, a wonderful neck, etc.

Whatever one you find, if it is a U.S. Ovation, you will have a great guitar.

I had a Celebrity 12 string, but never bonded with it. Bizarrely it was the only guitar I've ever turned a profit on.

A friend's shallow bowl legend was very nice, but my Adamas 1685 (especially after a refret and neck reset) is the bees knees.

I've had the Custom Legend 12 in a deep bowl and now have an Adamas 12. I personally believe that the Adamas-style hole configuration is better for a 12 string. After playing both for quite a while, I don't believe the Custom Legend (as much as I love those guitars and their appearance)project nearly as loud and clear accross the tonal spectrum as an Adamas. I'm sure that holds true in the case of that 1538 as well. I searched for at least 2 years for the perfect 12 string, and played every different one I could get my hands on before choosing the Adamas. Adamas 12 strings are THE BEST.

Hmm that's interesting. I was leaning towards a Custom Legend thinking the large soundhole would give me better acoustic tone/ volume.
AA top VS AAA top? With an "O" I wonder how different they would be?
I can't afford an Adamas but am willing to get a high spec wood top, so choice of top may be an issue.

The size of the soundhole doesn't equate with the size of the sound. The quality of the wood on the top will probably be more of a factor. The total size of the multi-holes in the Elite style guitars is supposed to at least equal the size of a single soundhole. I can't recall ever playing a 12 string Elite, but the sound of the 6 string Elites is different from the sound of a Custom Legend. It's hard to say what's better. It's just different. Knowing how much tension is on a 12 string, I'd prefer to have more wood under the strings rather than a hole, but I've never had a problem with my 12 string Balladeer.

Haven't you played mine?

Custom order (MWoody's originally) Custom Elite C2078LX BCS. It's the best damned wood-topped 12 I've ever had the pleasure of playing...

For gigging, I prefer my custom EA58 Viper 12. Vipers sustain forever.

Too many guitars. Too little memory. If it was one of the 17 guitars we unloaded from your rig at Miles' house, I might have played it, but I don't remember playing any 12 strings.
