Location: Location Location Location | Medium gauge strings on a deep bowl. The freboard on my balladeer was getting a little too flat, and I think I had the action a little low for light gauge strings. Last week I put mediums on it...bada bing! :eek: The guitar just came to life..The action's still low, about 5/64" on the low E; the relief in the neck came up to JUST the right bit, and the guitar is in overdrive.
I didn't see a lot of Ovation owners using medium gauge strings when I went through the archives. I think I saw Cliff's name and moody. Any others? |

| I use mediums on my 1869 for precisely the same reasons: I've got the action on that guitar just perfect and the added string mass drives the top better to improve tone. Also, there's no "fretting out" on the rare occasion when I hit the string too hard. |

Location: Alagoas, Brazil | Yep. On my Cort Source (gibson 335 copy) I also use them, but a bit lighter (.011). I started with Elixirs nanoweb, but I thought these were a bit on the bright side, so I tried the Chromes and liked the results. |

13-56's if you have a really good setup. A week later and my balladeer has become serious kickass good. I may never go to sleep. |

Location: Maryland | I have a balladeer that I got last week with medium strings on it. the tones are great. I was thinking to put a lighter gauge on them since i find it hard to push the strings down and my fingers get sore after about 10 minutes of playing. The previous owner removed 2 shims under the saddle as well.
i have a 2771 lx model. Do your strings feel hard to push down? I have a fender 12 string here that is like playing my ESP electric compared to this ovations tension on the strings |

Location: Location Location Location | Do your strings feel hard to push down? No, not at all. That's what I mean about a good setup. If the action is set up comfortably, along with the relief in the neck, then you get the benefit of playing with the heavier gauge strings, the tone of which you may or may not prefer, without feeling the strain on your hands and fingers.
I still prefer light gauge strings on the mid depth bowl, or smaller bodied guitars, as I think they just don't vibrate the same with medium gauge strings. |
