Tonight the family went and saw them, some of the best charisma I've seen between the folks on the stage in a LONG time. If they come near you, ya won't be disappointed with the show! The Silver Surfer absolutely shreds...

Joe's the man!

I had a chance to take lessons with him back in my teens when he lived in the Bay Area, before he was known. Couldn't afford it.

Tim, fix the pix!

I have the CD, still trying to warm up to it. I bet live is fantastic though!

I went out to their website and listened to a few tracks... and one thing that I guess endears so many to Satriani is his "sound" or "tone" and yet... while I think he's in a very elite group of players that includes Vandenberg, Vai, Rhoades it seems like he muttles up his brilliant and precise fretwork with the effects. This has always annoyed me. He's played with Purple and BOC and many others and always respects the original guitarists vision of tone and style, and and in many cases improves on what was there... but then his own works... he seems to want it awash in sea of flange and delay. I just don't get it.

Does Sammy play guitar at all with Chickenfoot? He's not slouch player either. Maybe not in the same class as Joe or Eddie, but he has style and it works for him.

Saw Sammy and Ronnie Montrose do a grudge match years and years ago. Sammy held his own.

As for your perception on Joe's over effected sound, I think you're right on the mark. My bass player and drummer play in another band as well, and their guitar player's a Satriani freak. To the point of playing a special edition SIlver Surfer Ibanez when he's giggin. He has this Digitech WHammy pedal that just drives me insane. It's just way too over the top, and he uses it in nearly every solo.

Someone needs to "hide" that pedal from him. The same way I had to eventually "hide" my son's blanket from him years ago.

All that said, I'm still a huge Joe fan.

Sammy played on the last song of the main set and the three encore songs as well, he was doing just fine :)
Joe also did one acoustic number that was clean with no effects and it was awesome. Played it on a gracie stand.
