I wanted to send my "O" to the Mother Ship last week but, with the way the weather is changing I am kind of leary.

I have a 1996 1866 legend 12 with no nicks or scratches and the top is like new. It has been played and I think it needs a neck reset and fret dressing.

My question is: should I wait until spring when the weather is better for shipping? Or, should I just do it and let it sit after I get it back to let it get to a normal temp before I open the case?

I really want to get this done but, I will wait if that is what is best. Thanks for your input.

Sam

There’s always a risk. I would ship it now. The quality of delivery is probably not affected that much by the weather. You could insure it or find a good luthier near you.

The temperature should be the least of your worries. By all means insure it! And put it in it's original box if at all possible. And cross your fingers.

The factory ships guitars out every day. I would not worry about it.

What makes you think it needs a neck reset? Other stuff, like a fret dressing, can be done by any decent local luthier. If it really does need a neck reset then it has to go to Mother.

I guess I need to quit worring and just send it.

FlySig: Action is too high with no shims under the saddle. Straight edge hits a little below the top of the bridge.

Thanks for the replys.

SHIP NOW!
The holiday season is quickly approaching, and things tend to get hectic, and "due care" may get a bit "compromised", IYKWIM.
And, cross your fingers.

I doubt you will have to worry much about the weather.

When I contacted the factory back the end of October for a Return Authorization for a repair, an employee stated that if timing wasn't critical, I may as well wait till after the first of the year as their schedule is pretty booked right now. Understand, of course, that wasn't an official company statement only a friendly suggestion which I appreciated greatly and hopefully won't get him in trouble by repeating here.

But officially, I friend who did sent one in at about that same time to replace some frets and do a tune-up got a estimated completion time of about 4 months. From my experience, their estimated completion times are actually a bit optimistic right now.

Also, I agree with seesquare that shipping during a busy holiday season may not be the best idea as shipping company's staffs will be augmented by minimally trained seasonal workers and, as he put it "due care may be compromised."

So, to me, the options would be to either ship it right away knowing you will be without it until early spring, or wait until early spring so you would have use of it during the holidays.

Personally, I would wait.

when I had the 1115 and 1537 refurbished and sent up during the holiday season a couple of years ago it was the same story...

that they'd get to them after the shutdown for the holidays. and that was prior to the re-tooling and Guild moving in, and just after FMIC's acquisition of Kaman.

personally I'd go ahead and get a RMA # for the guitar and ship it up after the holidays have passed.

It'll just sit in it's case till then at the mothership either way.

YMMV.

Regards,

Glenn
