Joined: April 2010 Posts: 32 Location: Okinawa Japan | So....I am heading to Afghanistan once again. First time I went, I came totally unprepared, took a shoebox beater, w/ no extra strings or extra picks, in a gigbag. Ended up using copper .032 aircraft safing wire as a high E, and .020 steel safing wire on the G for 2 months lol. This time, I have planned ahead(Musicians Friend shipping my case pending). The one thing that has me boggled is the humidity. It USUALLY goes from around 25% in the morning then JUMPS up to about 70% come the evening. Keeping this O near the optimal humidity range is going to be a pain....any suggestions? Oh, and "DON'T TAKE THE OVATION!" isn't the answer guys lol. Thanks.

People say it sounds really quite good. The other choice would be an Adamas. The carbon fiber top is immune to humidity. The neck is wood but I don't believe that the humidity swings during the day would be a problem. Actually, even a wood topped O probably won't mind the daily humidity swings. You could keep the guitar in a case with a damp-it, and that should stabilize the humidity over the day. Check out Al's website and his ebay store. He's got some very nice Adamas for about $1k. I think they were all intended for the overseas market, and they may not come with a new warranty. I keep looking at them and nearly pulling the trigger myself.

I will have to check some of the music stores on Island before we leave, last time I was at one all I could find were silica bags...which are good for the 90% Humidity we have in Okinawa. I'm not TOO worried about the iDea getting messed up, I have a real good case coming, as long as I can keep the humidity under control a little bit, it should probably be fine. Its only for 3-4 months this time anyways. The Adamas suggestion.....ahhhh, that is pretty much the reason I volunteered to go on this trip, so I could afford to buy one lol. And for some reason, the carbon fiber aspect keeps slipping my mind. Hopefully I come back with a 2080 to add to my growing collection. Thanks for the input.

I would think that Grabassistan would be somewhat easier on the guitar if you throw in the stuff Iffy is suggesting. Best of luck over there, I'll probably be headed there next but it'l be a while down the road.

Something that sounds good to play but is not a family heirloom. I have a really nice sounding CK047 so you can find some nice sounding Celebrity's... It ain't an Adamas, but nothing else is. Think of it this way... If you pay $365 for a used guitar, and it dies in a year... Wasn't it worth a dollar a day to have? Now... If it is worth $3 a day... You can take a Nice one and not bring it back. Oh yeah... Spend $60 or so and get a 10 pack of Strings!

Now I am working with HH-60 Rescue Blackhawks, so this deployment is about saving lives, not taking them.....which is definetly a good change of pace.
