Location: Urbana, IL | I'm trying to swap preamps and cans between my W597 (OP50) and W598 (VIP-5) I need some assistance please. BTW, the cans are not a direct swap as the pin configurations for the preamps are not the same.
BTW, I've searched the boards here and the internet but have had no luck finding the info I require.
I've got the can detached from the W598 but I'm stuck on remove the multi-pin connector from the can. There appears to be a little white tab but I don't know if it's part of the connector or the receptacle for the connector and as such, I can't tell which way to push it (towards the connector or away from) to remove it. I don't want to pull too hard on the wires leading to the multi-pin connector so anyone who has experience in this area, your help would be sincerely appreciated. |

Location: SoCal | I've got a VIP and Can in hand. The connector within the receptacle is white and completely recessed within the Can and labeled "XLR PCB".
If your little white tab is outside of the black Can, it is part of the plug. Squeeze the tab in towards the body of the plug. Don't pull on the wires, pull on the body of the plug |

The white tab is inside of the can. It's completely recessed.
I'll try what you suggested tomorrow, with a fresh set of eyes. Thank you for your assistance. |

Location: Urbana, IL | I fiddled with it a bit and it's not coming out easily, that's for sure. I tried a small set of tweezers I have for computer repair and I can't grip it and squeeze the tab to get it out. Here's a few pics to show what I'm dealing with.

Location: SoCal | Sorry Matt... your description of a little white tab had me thinking that your wire connector (plug) was some kind of new design with a longer, grab-able body and latch-tab. Yours looks just like mine. It's a friction fit. The Header on the circuit board inside the Can (that your connector is plugged onto) resembles this...
The "tab" that you see is called a Friction Lock and is part of the component that is soldered to the circuit board inside the Can. There's a tiny bit of room for the Lock to flex back towards the circuit board as the connector is pulled off.
Make sure the pre-amp is out of the Can.
IC pullers usually work great, but there was not enough room on the sides for me to get in there... so I used my favorite weapon, a pair of needle-nose hemostats. I got a good grip on one of the connector-body "webs" (on either side of the middle orange wire) and pulled the connector straight out. The friction-lock was not that strong and I probably could have just grabbed the wires and pulled, but I would not suggest it. |

Location: Urbana, IL | Thank you for the reply again Noah. I guess I just need a better tool for the job which in this case is a pair of needle nose hemostats. Now I just need to see if I can find them locally or will have to order them. I just don't want to bugger this thing up. |

Location: SoCal | Jeweler's pliers, little needle nose pliers... anything that you can get a good grip with. I try to supplement my lack of fine hand coordination with an appropriate tool.
Other guys have replaced Cans... what method have you guys used? Woody? Fred?
Email OFC member mtnbikerfred. I was with him one day while he quickly swapped-out a failing VIP/Can in his KOA. Ask him if he remembers yanking-off the XLR connector at the Can. |

Location: Urbana, IL | This sucker is in good. I cannot get it out for love or money. Bah. I used the needle nose hemostats to pull the plug itself but it's not budging. This is so bloody simple. I feel like an idiot. |

Location: Urbana, IL | Huzzah! I finally got that little sucker out. I ended using a small flat head screw driver to push the connector away from the tab while lifting/prying it up. Everything is still intact. |
