Is there a simple and free way to edit the tags in an MP3? It looks like there are a number of fields for data, like the song name, album name, artist name, date of release, etc. Especially for home recorded songs, is there a way to edit this information after creating an MP3 file? Is there a way to insert this info in a WAV file?

The free version of WinAmp will let you edit the tags on MP3's. WAV's don't store that data.

You can do the same in iTunes. Right click on the song in the playlist, choose "Get Info", then add/change the tags information in the dialog box that opens.

I use this:-

mp3 tag tool

It's free, it's fab, and it doesn't clog the system like some programs like WinAmp and iTunes do. (Sorry, not meaning to massively slate those progs, I just don't like them...)

edited because I'm rubbish at linking

Okay... since I have openly declared myself as a geek-wannabe, I'll ask.

What is an mp3 "tag"?
It has to be more that just a file name, right?

jb... I know what you mean about programs like iTunes. They seem to effect the whole damn system. The Kodak photo program is the same way.

Brad - "tags" are meta-information that's kept encoded within the file in addition to the compressed music. The tags are things like Artist, Composer, Album, Year, Track Number, Disc Number, Music Genre, and Notes (which can be anything else you want to include up to a character limit). Some media decoding/playing software, especially bloatware like iTunes, use the info in those tags to help organize your music library & display information about them as they play.
