I rescued a lovely Ovation Thunderhead guitar from a pawn shop and want to know if I have something rare and special or not. This is a hollow boddied arch topped acoustic-electric guitar with two velvet hammer pickups and might they be gold tuning pegs. It is in very nice condition, plays great and even came with a fine case. By the serial number I have learned that this guitar was made in July-Nov 1968 and was the top of the line in the Electic Storm series.
How many were made? What should I insure this baby for? Please tell all.

...could this T-head possibly be of the "blonde" variety in color?......

Velvet Hammer pickups were designed by the late great pedal-steel player Red Rhodes. They are excellent pickups but are not the original pickups for this guitar which would have had DeArmonds. It would need replacement pickup surrounds and/or some surgery to install the Velvet Hammers. This will adversley affect the value to a collector, though not necessarily to a player.

No can do on posting a picture just yet, and yes, she is a true blonde fading to a redish brown near the binding. The one piece top is likely spruce while the back is a lovely bookmatched maple and very blonde. The binding is white matching the trim around the f sound holes and up the edges of the neck and there is a little abalone inlay on the fret board.

These guitars are really nothing special and not something to hold on to. In fact get rid of it right away. Donate it to the Moody PI fund and you will feel much better. So will Paul. He'd probably even pay you to donate it to the fund!

Sorry, Paul.

It was a good idea in theory, but those things never work!
