A britain selling a Ltd. Ed. 1988-P states that it has serial number 1524, yet the Ovation Ltd. Ed. history web page states that only 1177 were built.

I wrote cust. serv. about this confusion factor and asked them to confirm which is in error - the number of units built or the serial number (owner confirms SN is 1524). So far there has not been a reply. A prior cust. serv. inquiry took about a month to get a reply. Is there a problem with using e-mail to reach cust. serv.?

I am interested in this guitar model, yet I don't want to buy-in to a fraudulent sale. I need this clarified soon for me to be in the bidding. Thanx for any help you can give.

**UPDATE**
My conversation today with Cust. Serv. resulted in the discovery that the published quantities for the 1988-P is in error. When they checked the returned registration cards for that issue, the highest one they had on file was 1734, instead of the published 1177. Unfortunately he could not give me the actual numbers produced. He did confirm that every annual Collector's (Limited) Edition started with serial #1, so no issue should have a serial number greater than the number issued, except in the case of fraud/mistake in the model or database error as in this situation.

If time is important, I'd suggest just calling customer support. Their number is on the Ovation website. I have found they almost always answer eMail, but I assume they get a lot of it too.
I for one would be interested to what you find as I thought serial numbers in that time frame would be 6 digits. I didn't realize the collectors were numbered if they are. Anyway, whatever info you have, or what someone else may post will help update the reference section of this site.

Thanx for the reply. Yes, I will post whatever I find out. I recently saw a Col. Ed. 2002-AC with SN 481 out of 732, so the recent ones are evidently serialized from 001. I guess I'll have to wait until fri. to make that call. I hoped to find out before that though from this forum, if somebody knew what the truth is. It still does not seem right that the serial number is larger than the build number.

Just a WAG (wild ass guess), sometimes in the early days of computing numbering sequences were started at 1000 or some such thing to avoid the dreaded 999 or some such test number that early data bases used for testing. The programmers would say "we'll never have more than 300 customers so I'll use 999 to test the algorithms, so when he turned the system over to the real world and found out sales are in the thousands, he would crawl into the CEO's office, sweating profusely, and beg that all numbering start at 1000. It was only a temporary salvation, as those programmers and Dbase were rooted out and destroyed, but the numbers remained. As I said, a WAG.

First I don't work for Hamer customer service and believe it or not don;t always have all the answers.

If you sent an e mail before the Thanksgiving holiday I would suspect that it may take until next week to get it anawered.

Another note please realize that to the best of my knowledge there is no comprehensive listing or corresponding software to search every single Ovation item. Therefore it makes it difficult to answer some questions. Although a seriel number question is of major urgency to you, someone getting their guitar repaired and back in a timely fashion could take precident.

patience

Maybe the C-Series has a C-Series number and a serial number? That would esplane your want for 6 digits Miles. Doesn't answer the first question though although I'd seriously doubt someone would knock off a 88 C-Series.

Thanx guys for the comments. I'll try to contact someone at cust. serv. by phone fri. If I learn anything, I'll post it here. Alpep, I just assumed that you were 'connected' with Ovation. Many other official forums are moderated by company techs. that can act as another input to the cust. serv. dept.

I guess you did not read the opening page....Did anyone ever read the opening page?????

NO we are not affiliated with Ovation Guitars or Kaman Music Corporation in any way. We are not supported by them nor or Miles nor I employees.

You would think that with all the time I devote to this I should get paid. So Rick Hall et al you know where to forward my check.....
