"MARCIA BALL JOINS THE HACKBERRY RAMBLERS ON NBC'S TODAY SHOW!
Alligator recording artist Marcia Ball joins her longtime friends The Hackberry Ramblers on NBC-TV's Today Show in a feature story to air on Wednesday, February 26. The Today Show story on The Hackberry Ramblers' 70th anniversary features a guest appearance by Ball, who joins in at a Sunday afternoon dance deep in bayou country. The feature was filmed both at McGee's Landing in Henderson, LA, and at the Rendez-vous des Cajuns radio show in Eunice, LA.

The Hackberry Ramblers were founded in 1933 by Luderin Darbone in Hackberry, LA, and are among the most influential Cajun string bands from Louisiana. They play a mixture of western swing and Cajun sounds using fiddle, guitar, drums, bass and the occasional accordion -- creating a distinctly New Orleans-flavored version of pure country music. The Ramblers first recorded in 1935 and have recorded and gigged in one form or another ever since. Among the labels for which the group has recorded are Bluebird, Deluxe, Goldband, Arhoolie, and (in 1997) Hot Biscuits. Today the Ramblers continue to perform at folk and music festivals, with Darbone still serving as the group's leader.

Ball, whose parents used to hire The Hackberry Ramblers to play at dances in Vinton, LA, during the 1960s, contributed guest vocals on The Hackberry Ramblers' Deep Water album, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1997. Alligator will release Ball's next album, SO MANY RIVERS, on April 22, 2003"

Yeah, she plays Houston regularly. I saw her years ago at the old Bon-Ton room, before Pat and Pete shut it down. How do you know about her - way out there in California?

Saw her on PBS one night. It was on some program that came on right after Austin City Limits (don't remember it's name). I've been a fan ever since. The only albums of hers that I don't have are "Freda and The Firecats" & "Circuit Queen". If anyone has either one I'd be interested in obtaining them. The thing that really got me hooked was her enthusiasm for music.

Yeah, she's got the pipes and the feel.

You might like Susan Tedeschi. That girl can PLAY, and sing. She's been on the local Texas circuit for a number of years. Incidentally, she's now married to Derek Trucks. Yep, nephew of Butch Trucks from the Allman Bros. Have you ever heard or seen this guy play? I saw him two years ago - he was 19 and opened for ABB at an outdoor show in Houston with his band, then played with ABB alongside Dickey Betts for the headliner gig. Guy is amazing. Obviously a Duane disciple, but he's innovative - not rehashing the same old licks. His backing band is actually pretty diverse, with three black guys taking vocals, bass, and drums. In their original stuff you can hear many influences - it gets jazzy at times, R&B, blues, world beat, rockin' - and Derek is ever present, laying down beautifully appropriate melody lines on the slide. I saw him around March '02 open for Eric Johnson, and it was the same deal. They are a jam band - different every night, always moving forward. I think he's doing the same kind of deal this summer, opening with his band and then playing with ABB. Only now, he's playing along with Warren Haynes instead of Dickey.

Another guy I saw on Austin City Limits that blew me away was Jonny Lang. He did a couple songs with Charlie Sexton and Double Trouble. His CD's are mixed too slick. When heard and seen live, this guy gets in the zone, both vocally and when when he's playing. Every now and then you see somebody who possesses that indefinable "it". I think Lang and Trucks both have it.

Susan Tedeschi 3 albums.
Jonny Lang 3 albums. I really like the one he recorded when he was 14 years old. "Kid Jonny Lang and the Big Bang", also known as "The Big Bang".

My musical tastes run all over the place. For example the people I listened to today:
Diana Krall, Mr. Big, Dvorak, Bartok, Don Henley, and I'm currently listening to Hiroshima.

Seen Marcia Ball a couple of times. Seems like last time at the Bedford Blues Festival (here in north Texas).
She plays this song about "I wear my fingernails long so they click when I play the piano..."
and swings her leg like, well, like, like, well, like crazy. ;)

If you like Susan Tedeschi you might like Shannon Curfman although she reminds me of Bonnie Raitt some.

Some other female blues player I've been listening to lately are Debbie Davies, Deborah Coleman and Joanna Connor.

Are Lou Ann Barton and Angela Strehli still active in Texas?

Texas Music Cafe was a show that ran for one year, probably in 99 or 00, and they went around to bars all over Texas that catered to singer-songwriters, or anything original. I even saw Ian Moore on there one night, and did not recognize him by sight or sound. I saw him 3-4 times in the early 90's playing at Rockefeller's or the Satellite Lounge or the Bonton Room, and at that time he seemed to be doing a sort of SRV meets glamorous leather deal. His playing was always impressive, but it came with a package of rock idol showmanship. I think he's dropped all the pretention now.

Kind of an off-the-beaten-path show. Is that the one BruDev?

I was sorry that show disappeared.

The dates seem to be a little to recent. Although the Sattelite Lounge sounds familiar. Out here in SoCal the PBS programming seems to change about every six mounths. For a while they where playing Austin City Limits then Live From The House Of Blues followed by a music programm out of New York. Which is the first place I saw Chris Issacs. You could sit down and watch about 1 1/2 hours of music, but it didn't last long. One of the problems with watching Austin City Limits out here is that it's on early and sometimes you just aren't home yet.
