So, I just wanted to confirm that they were actually made at one time with rosewood boards. Looks like RW to me......

That don't look like an ebony bridge either. I sure hope that isn't what happens if someone were to put lemon oil on it. oops

I was thinking Ovation may have made a few early ones with RW boards.. Actually the bridge might be ebony - but it kind of looks like walnut stained dark doesn't it... :-)

I was looking at the photos of a 1778T over at Elderly (since they often do a lot of nice and detailed photos of their in stock guitars): http://elderly.com/new_instruments/items/1778T-BLK.htm This is definitely a model with an ebony fretboard, but it also does appear to be "lighter" and almost like rosewood. -Zadillo

This is probably undied ebony. Frankly, I like it better. And as far as I know, they were always ebony boards.

It was overall darker than the one in the picture I posted. Also had a Carvin bolt that had a similar African ebony board. IMO they are very beautiful and can very much resemble rosewood in coloration. Here's a link that explains current ebony sources.. take a look at the African ebony.. ebony info
