| I got the solid koa topped Ovation Celebrity tenor ukulele. I guess, to sum up this uke, you need to study the hang tag:  Really study it. "PLUG IT IN". That really says it all. I used to think that Ovation's "Plug It In" was just a cool slogan. With this instrument, it's more of an instruction in how to appreciate the instrument. So, here it is plugged in to 250 watts of Fishman Loudbox  This uke is a pretty (very pretty) instrument designed to support an excellent pickup and preamp system. It gives great plugged in sound and control, with an instinctive and quick ability to dial in the sound with some pre-shaped eq and sliders. This works really great for me, because I have long nails and I can dial out that nail attack sound with ease. The neck/fretboard feels precise, action at the nut is perfect (important to me). Very professional feel, very comfortable to play (all evening, in this case) Intonation is very good up to 7th fret, where it begins to flatten. Glad it has strap buttons. Especially with the rounded back, I like using a strap. But acoustically, it is not at all loud. Very even tonal balance string to string, sweet sound, but NOT loud. (The Applause soprano uke I had was louder). What this instrument is all about is what's on the hang tag: PLUG IT IN. That's what I bought it for, to plug in and gig, playing a comfortable (all nighter) neck on a reliable instrument. Great amplification, but not loud acoustically. I included a peek inside through the battery hatch. The bracing seems HUGE to me, and the electronic guts really take up a lot of room. The hatch features a spider like bracket which is drawn to the rounded hatch with a screw, tensioned by a durable foam donut. That alone probably hurts the acoustics (Actually, I may just leave the hatch off - I get more acoustic volume that way...) Doesn't the bracing look huge? I guess this is meant to be a very stable platform for the pickup.  The hatch:  The pickup ,an outstanding Ovation feature. Combined with their OP-24+ preamp, it's really the heart of Ovation's sound.  To sum it up: Sweet - very sweet - player, great SOLID tool for plugged-in performance, pretty flamed koa with appealing knots, nicely bookmatched but featuring some grain runout. Bottom line: I would NOT again pay extra for the solid top. I would go with the Applause laminated spruce tenor and save the difference. Even if the koa gets louder with age, I think the heavy bracing will hold it back. Back to the hang tag, which should be taken seriously: PLUG IT IN. | Beauty uke, Hankster! After playing this for almost a week, I'm glad to say that the acoustic volume has increased a wee bit - so maybe there's hope for it "opening up"...though it's still a relatively quiet uke.
