Well, I've got an '81 in at least as good condition & this listing blew my socks off. So, if you're right, I'm selling mine.

Did I fall asleep only to awaken in a different reality? I was just considering what I could sell so I can purchase a classic I'm in love with. Problem solved - my mid 70's balladeer!

Mine's got NO fret wear and not a scratch or a pick mark on it. I'm gonna ask $1500 for it!

That's what I've been doing wrong!
I've been listing my old guitars at reasonable prices.
If I list 'em as 'Vintage' and ask for a Thousand Bucks,
then they will think that they got a deal at $800!
My 1621 is five years older and has electronics and a brown case!

Geesh, sounds like the "lack of respect" comes from actual owners.

I am now torn between this one and a 1680. Decisions, decisions... :)

Or I could just buy this one for $350. It must not be as much of a collectors item :)

Wow, as a new guitar player and potential 'buyer' of a 'vintage' guitar, this thread is very interesting indeed. There are some people with common sense out there. The word 'vintage' in an ad usually turns me off immediately ...

I suppose 1978 is vintage to some people, and 30 years *is* arguably a valid threshold for the "vintage" tag, but there's a big gap IMO between a pre-war acoustic or a '59 LP burst and just about every guitar made in 1978. Calling them all "vintage" or "classic" devalues those terms because they usually denote more than an item's age to most people.

Put in perspective, those now-priceless bursts were as old in 1978 as a 1990-made guitar is today, but they were already commanding hefty prices back then because they were special. "Classic Rock" (think BOSTON, Queen, Zep, Stones, and other great '70s bands) thrived in the '90s (some still today), 20 years and more after their heyday. All other things being equal, we should be at the height of "Classic Grunge" popularity now (~20 years after Nirvana, Soundgarden, etc.). The fact that we're not proves that all things are NOT equal and says something about quality taking precedence over mere chronological age.

I bought a brand new AMC Pacer in 1976. If I still had it today, I'd be embarrassed to call it "vintage". Hell, I'd just be embarrassed. But "Bohemian Rhapsody" lives on as a true classic.
