Joined: September 2006 Posts: 143 Location: Shotley Bridge, Northern England | My 1990 Collector's has arrived now, and I'm delighted with it! (Pictures to follow shortly). I wanted one because of the extra neck length free of the body, ebony board and Elite-type soundholes. Oh, and I'm a sucker for pretty guitars too! It set me thinking about the variations in the series, and how well these have been received. I've searched the threads here for info on the Collectors Series, and I think I have some insight into the different models; the 2001 Redwood seems a very popular issue for instance. However, I would like to know which Collector's guitar (if any?) presses your buttons, and which are, in your view, turkeys?

As I am writing this, the '06 Collectors with the koa top, contour bowl and VIP preamp is the one that's been getting my attention lately ... but that's just me though.

My only complaint with the whole collectors series idea is that, while they are nice instruments, they usually don't stray too far outside the lines. Last spring at the factory I walked by a proto of the '07 and didn't even notice it. Oh is THAT what it is? I really wished they had pushed the envelope a bit more. That's why '97 is my favorite all time collector model. Dave

The 1987 is known for it's tone, and the 1997 is the most unique. The '88 and '89 were obviously produced with the 80's rock scene in mind and are in a niche with the Thunderbolt; all pretty cool but not the most popular for a variety of reasons. I still personally favor the 1990 Nutmeg top as my favorite in terms of aesthetics, but the ones I have owned were not among the best sounding. I also had a couple of 2001 Redwood tops that looked three dimensional, the grain and finish were so well done. Shall I go on?
