Location: CA | Speaking of toilet seat guitars...
They are a fairly big deal in and around Marin County, CA. Because they were built by a guy named Charlie Deal, out of real wooden toilet seats onto which he would mount a purchased neck, a 'middle piece' and pickups of your choice. Because he did each one of these things by hand, Deal Guitars became something of a big deal in the '80s-90s. Almost collectors items then — they are certainly investments now, since Charlie passed away a year ago this month. Charlie himself was a little old guy who rode a beat-up bicycle around town (often with a guitar neck for his latest project strapped on the bike rack) and all the restaurants gave him meals. He reminded me of 'Ace' that Jimmy Buffett sang about in his first album. They once blocked off a whole street for a Deal Day and a whole bunch of noted local musicians showed up to jam, all of them playing Charlie's toilet seat guitars. There's even a glimpse of one of his ax's on the cover of Huey Lewis 'Sports' album, which was photo'ed in a local bar called the 2 a.m. Club, and Huey or his guitar player supposedly owned several Deals.
