I have a chance to buy a red Thunderhead semi-hollow serial #A785 for $600. My research says it was built in '67 or '68 in USA. It plays and sounds pretty good, probably needs a good set-up, new strings, and some TLC. The neck feels good for my hand, it seems to just fit. There is no obvious structural damage. It passes the eyeball test for straightness. The frets are not gouged. Some scratches in the finish no deep gouges. There appear to be some cracks in the finish. It looks quite nice, overall. The low E string sounds a little wonky, has a weird buzz. I know and trust the seller; his best guess is it needs no more than $150 of work. The pots are a little scratchy with dust. Give me a few days and I could provide pictures if needed.

I have been taking lessons since April, very much a beginner. My musical goals are to play blues and blues/rock. I'm not looking for a career in music, I just want to be able to play well. I have a new Yamaha acoustic FG700S and an Ibanez GRG 170 solid body electric circa 2010. The Thunderhead would complete my set, so to speak.

I'm looking for general info on the build of the guitar: what kind of wood in body, fret board, and neck, how good are the tuners, what PUP's, that kind of stuff. Any general opinions on the overall quality of this particular model, does it have a good reputation as a nice sounding/playing guitar? I like the idea of owning and playing a near 50 year old guitar but the daily playing part is most important.

I hope this isn't too long winded but I wanted to be thorough. Thanks for your time.
