1) My Adamas has a "hand rubbed urethane oil" finish on the neck. Most Ovations that I've seen have a gloss finish on the neck. Is there a such thing as an Ovation with an oil finish neck?
2) If I look at the specs (on the website) for a 1769-ADII, it says the fingerboard is "ebony". When I look at the specs for a C2079 LX (like Dave's), it says the fingerboard is "bound deluxe ebony". What is the difference between "ebony" and "bound deluxe ebony"?
3) Is there a single version of the contour bowl, or are there super shallow, mid depth and deep versions as in the standard bowl?
4) When I look at the specs for a 1869, it describes the pickup as "Ovation piezoelectric". My Adamas is listed as "Ovation High Output". the C2079 LX is listed as "Original Patented Pickups". Are these all the same?
More to the point, is there a place where I can learn this stuff without asking a bunch of newbie questions here?

Location: Warren,Pa. | Regarding question #1...On most acoustic guitars the fingerboard and bridge are the only unfinished wood and, as such, need an occasional oiling or they'll dry out. In your case, the neck is also unfinished and needs an oil treatment from time to time. They say there's a dose of oil applied to these areas at the factory. Some folks who prefer a slippery neck will apply paste wax, which is somewhere between oiling and a "permanent" finish. I say all of this because I think it's more fun to get responses than to be directed to answers elsewhere. I'm sure you'll get both here. John <>{ |

| Not sure about most of the Pickup questions I have questions about those myself, but I can say I own both neck types. My Adamas guitars have each style neck, not sure which I like better? The 12 has the gloss finish and this looks fantastic on this guitar? 12 strings are (for me) great sounding chord guitars, and not much else, so for what I play on it the neck is not much of a factor. The finish works perfectly for this guitar. My cutaway 6 has the walnut neck and board and I oil this every few months lightly with my personal mixture of lemon, linseed, aromatic cedar oil & butchers wax. It shines for a few days and buffs up nice for a few weeks like this. So far this neck is the best feel I have ever had on a guitar neck! An ohh yeah It smells like a cedar forest as you first open the case when it's traveling.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Your options are 1) buy a Martin, or 2) buy a bag of cedar chips and put them (in the mesh bag) inside your case. Most home linen stores (like Bed Bath & Beyond) sell them. Dave |

Location: boulder | I think "bound ebony fretboard" means that the ebony fretboard is bound with an ebony strip (binding). it is hard to notice, both being ebony and all.
One of my cases smells like perfume. I like the smell, not sure what it is covering up, but well... ignorance is bliss..peace |

It just started snowing like crazy here, so I'll try to get home, build a fire, get out the beer and start playing the Ovations.
It'll take forever to get home because of all those California transplants who have never driven in snow before. Keep Arnold there, too. He's ruining Sun Valley. Actually, the local pastime was to count Arnold sightings. |
