Someone probably has explained this before, while I was out of commission, dealing with cancer and after effects of chemo, but can anyone here give a detailed description of microspheres, and how the technology actually works with Ovation microsphere-impregnated bowls?

I did a little poking around on this site, and it seems that Ovation started using glass microspheres in the Lyrachord bowls starting with the LX series in the early 2000s. This is similar to syntactic foam used in oceanography and marine engineering to provide a buoyant material that can handle deep ocean depths. The technology dates to the 1950s, and started being used commercially in the 1960s (see the Wikipedia article on syntactic foam). Hollow glass spheres are mixed in some sort of plastic matrix. Being hollow, the spheres are light, but the glass sphere is actually pretty strong and can handle high pressures, depending on its design. While the original use was marine applications, it is also used in other fields. In archery, one of my other hobbies, syntactic foam has been used in the middle layer of some high end bow limbs since the late 1990s, taking the place of maple laminations. For guitar bodies, mixing the microspheres into the Lyrachord would make it lighter for the same thickness, without reducing strength.
