Joined: July 2013 Posts: 34 | What would it be for you? I've tried plenty over the years and a couple of my favorite sounding ovations is the deep bowl custom legend lx I have and surprisingly a mid bowl Elite T I've played, to me it had a great sound although it was kind of ugly in my opinion.. Although I do love many of the vintage ovation legends I have tried over the years and they have a good punchy loud sound to them as well, but there's one that I've played (I believe a 1717, not 100%) that was a complete relic no joke, finish chipped off half of it and glue all over it where they glued the bridge back at home recklessly but it sure sounded beautiful.. I always wanted to try the Koa collectors edition and the 1537 but haven't had the chance yet, but opinions?

I've got a great sounding, 40 year-old 1657. My GCS771 with a killer cedar top. I have an old beater 1111 with a 3-plank top that is awesome. So I am gonna have to go with MWoody on this one... Whichever one you are holding.

But Ovation is not only a guitar, it´s a concept. Don´t be shy and use any material and any construction that will match the idea of a unique guitar. In former discussions I favourited the Adamas 1687 cannon. But IMHO there is one Ovation guitar which combines all the Ovation IDEAS to a state of close-to-perfection:The rare, too rare Adamas 1187-247. -The lightest and deepest bowl for maximum acoustic power -Adamas carbon fibre top - The use of offset-soundholes and the lightest possible fan-bracing, (much lighter than on the 1687) -Event the headstock was made thinner and lighter than on the 1687, slotted head for better string angle. -Perfect intonation and balance and ideal size of frets . This guitar really is unique, not comparable with any other (high grade!) guitars, it represents a class of it´s own. All the other Ovation guitars may be fine, but they are just the road leading to this one. Maybe Ovation should have built more than 100 of these...

With bourbon and bong in front of a fire in the fishing cabin it's definitely the ol' 1127 that proudly has years-old motorcycle bug splats on it that will never come completely off. With pencil and paper in the studio, it's definitely a 1619 CL that's humming out that classic, unmistakable Ovation trademark sound. With stage and a rockin' crowd, who wouldn't be proud the flash a Viper? When busking on the street, it's definitely.. well.. ask Arthur. If guitar is a language, then Ovation is but one dialect of it. An awesome one. Proud to know you all.

If this would be an ice cream forum we would really love to talk about our favourite ice cream. What is wrong about gloryfying -repeatedly- our beloved guitars? I believe that´s part of the reason why we have (lots of) them.

I'm also in an area where not a lot of interest in Ovations, so all except one of my guitars have been bought off eBay with no chance to play them first. Best sounding Ovation I ever played - acoustically - had was a pewter-colored 1778T. Plus I always got a nice whiff of wood every time I started playing from those side holes. I didn't particularly like the color, so like a dummy I sold it and bought a black one of the same model. It sounded dead. Sold it and found a red one. Not dead but not like the pewter original. Sold that and got another black one. Also Hmmm/so-so. By now kicking myself black and blue for selling the pewter. There was also a special run side-hole textured Ovation with an epaulet - there was a run of 10 or 12 originally done for Guitar Center I think, and I got one of those. It sounded good but I don't like that modified cutaway deep bowl or whatever you call it. So sold it, too. Anyway, sold the second black T and currently playing a 1869 CL, which sounds nice but not at all that nice, rich tone of that original 1778T. May try to find another one one of these days.

I wish I could get the sound that Matt gets from a guitar. In the end it's not really the guitar for most of us, it's the fingers.
