They came in natural, black and koa finish tops (laminated). They were built like a tank which made them pretty heavy by ukulele standards but one of the better plugged in options at the time. I've been hitting youtube to learn some of the fundamentals. It appears they'd be fairly easy to learn the basics on and I really do like the Tenor Uke tone. So I just need to find a good fit for me.

My experience with Ovation ukes is pretty much limited to trying one for a few minutes here and there when I run into someone who owns one. I also don't think the uke in the video sounds good at all. Pretty tinny to my ear. My impression is that, despite my positive impression of Ovation guitars, I don't think Ovation ukes are all that great. Admittedly my Ovation uke experience is limited but, with Ovation guitars, I was impressed after trying one for only a few minutes. I think the uke's body is too small for the Ovation technology and a heavy uke just doesn't seem right. I also want a uke to sound good without amplification. Ovation technology might work for a mandolin with it's steel strings but a uke is a much more delicate instrument with it's nylon strings. There are a multitude of good, affordable ukes out there. A good, beginner to intermediate uke can be had for around $100, un-amplified. A Tenor uke is a good size choice for most players although smaller women may prefer a Concert or even a Soprano. The Soprano has that traditional uke sound but many find it too small to play comfortably. In my ukulele play-along group of about 30 - 40 regulars, I'd say that 80% own Tenors. Personally, I prefer a Baritone uke (I also have a tenor and a soprano), which is tuned like a four stringed guitar, DGBE. One advantage of this is that you don't have to learn new chord names when transitioning from a guitar. With it's larger body, an Ovation baritone might sound pretty good but I've never played one. If you are an Ovation fan and get a kick out of having a ukulele sized instrument that looks like a shrunken Ovation Elite then go for it. But if you are actually looking for great sounding and playing traditional ukulele then look elsewhere. For the same money I would urge you to look at Kala or Lanakai brands.
