??Hey guys, I recently got my hands on an ExoticWood Custom Legend, and noticed the markings "Crafted in Korea" on it. I ran across a thread on here "Made in Korea - good or not," and was wondering a couple things.

I may be kinda dumb here but is "Made" and "Crafted" the same thing?

On that "Made in Korea" thread, what I took from that was, the Korean made guitars are low end and inferior to USA models.

This guitar I played was The ExoticWoods Collection Custom Legend® Deep Contour Koa Burst C2079AXP-KOAB, and on the Ovation website it retails for $1,999.99. (http://www.ovationguitars.com/guitars-six-strings/C2079AXP-KOAB)

To me, the guitar had a great feel and sound.

I do apologize, I don't often buy guitars. I mostly sing, so forgive me for my silly questions.

So, since this guitar is "Crafted in Korea", would it be considered a low end guitar, and inferior to USA models? And if so, do low-end guitars usually sell for $1,999.99? If in the future I decided to upgrade to a NOT low end guitar, should my price point start above $2,000?

To sum all this up,
Are the $1,999.99 ExoticWoods Collection Custom Legend guitars low-end models?
What are general price points for low-end guitars, and good quality guitars?

Thanks!

Crafted = Made
Top is skinned with the "Exotic" wood... making it a laminate.

It should sell for no more that 1200.

Following the "Good, Better, Best" marketing positioning... I would say it fits in the "Better" range.... but for 1200 bucks you can get still get a very nice used USA ovation.

I own this guitar and am happy with it.

Yes the Koa Ovation ExoticWood Custom Legend is a laminate, since there's a layer of Koa over the AAA Solid Spruce top.

How much does the layer of Koa over a solid piece of spruce negatively affect the sound of this guitar?

Hi cleandust.
Can't speak to the DW offshore guitars... haven't had the opportunity to play one yet. I did buy one of their Korean exotic wood mandos. The lam top sounds excellent. I'm also blown away by the fit and finish. I've been playing USA O's since the early 70's and I could easily have been fooled into believing this instrument was built in New Hartford.

crafted is just marketing spoo

it sounds classier than made

check the thickness of that top compared to any other guitar you may own....

that's all I have to say about it

I am constantly amazed at the ever-more-spectacular woods used in guitar making. Many are pretty enough to hang in an art gallery. That said, it's my understanding that most of the exotic tops have to be laminated onto the 'standard' spruce (or maybe cedar?) for the simple reason that they are not stable or strong enough to take the stresses inherent in guitar manufacturing and playing - without having to be so thick that it just wouldn't work. I have not played any of the Exoticwood models, but have played whatever year Collector series came out with that pretty Cherry top years ago. I was not impressed by it over a regular high-end O, although it could have just been that particular guitar. I've also played and looked at several of the new-generation "X" models made in Korea and was pretty impressed by fit, finish and sound. I'm a big fan of the 1778T models and the black 1778TX I played a year or so ago sounded and looked every bit as good as the older 'Murcan-made ones.
