Hi all! New guy here...

I have an unmarked Ovation (no label inside) that seems to be a 1651. Its S/N dates it to mid-1978, and it's a deep-bowl with stereo outputs and an unmarked truss rod cover. I guess this means it's not a true John Lennon, but can't find the resources to pin it down. Can you help?

Thanks!!

A 1651 is a Legend. A 1978 Legend is a Legend.
The original 1651 was made between 1978 and 1983.
In 2004, a "John Lennon Acoustic" album was released.
On that album sleeve there is a photo of John Lennon playing a 1651 Legend that was made about the same time as yours was made.

When that photo was taken, that guitar was NOT called a John Lennon Legend.
In 2005, Ovation released a reissue Ovation Legend Limited.. HERE

So, your guitar is like the guitar that John Lennon played in the recordings used for that album.
But yours in not the commemorative "John Lennon Ovation" guitar.

Roger that. Thanks!

I've seen lots of pix of these without the truss rod cover on the headstock. What's up with that?

And... I'm thinking of offering it for sale/trade so I can pick up a jazz box. What's market value these days?

The Truss Rod Cover depends on the Year that it was made.
Around 1981 Ovation switched to the Kaman Bar neck that does not have a Truss Rod Cover.

As to the current value, look at "sold listings' on evilBay

Interesting... So did the 2005 'special edition" 1651 John Lennon use the Kaman Bar, and just have a truss rod cover for looks?

Hey, could someone "let me in," please? I have a question about the significance of a crack in the lacquer at the base of the neck that I'd like to post in the forums.
Thanks!

In response to your signature line:

What is the appropriate number of guitars?
n+1

Except as you approach SST-1, where s+ the Spousal Tolerance Threshold.

And -this- is why they don't all live in the same room.

Interesting... So did the 2005 'special edition" 1651 John Lennon use the Kaman Bar, and just have a truss rod cover for looks?

Later models have different Truss Rod Configurations.
The LX series (and it's cousins) have a Truss Rod Cover.
The 2005 John Lennon Edition has an LX style neck.

Most Ovation Celebrity guitars have the Truss Rod adjustment in the body,
but do not have the Kaman Bar.
Over the years, it varies from model to model.
But models that suddenly stopped having a Truss Rod Cover around 1981 got a Kaman Bar.
That was a BIG innovation way back then.

Yep... You've gotta try it before you can find out whether it works.

BTW, I put my git on the local CL page, if you're interested in pix. (Do you think the price is fair?)
