Hi, all.

After stringing up and playing my first Ovation (Celebrity cc045 12 string), I like it so much I an now on the lookout for a higher end 12. There is a used Adamas 1886 12 for sale locally - what do you think about this model?

Thanks!

This is likely a 1885 model, the super shallow bowl 12 string brother of the super shallow bowl 6 string 1881. These don't come up too often, but are great guitars especially when plugged in. Let us know if you pull the trigger.

If it is a shallow bowl it will sound great plugged in but the acoustic tone may be a bit thin. My experience playing shallow bowls is that they are lacking some of the bass, though one or two members here have reported otherwise. In general I would look for a deep bowl, a contour bowl (also deep) or a mid bowl Adamas.

I have a deep bowl Adamas 1688 12string, acoustically and electrically perfect, but a very heavyweight guitar, built like a tank. I have a deep contour Adamas 2081 6string, the same perfection in sound but much easier to handle, because the newer body appears to be made of lighter material, and there´s absolutely no lack in bass response, I simply love it.
I once had a 1866 12string shallow bowl legend, which had a very good projection, good electrics but in fact not the best bass, especially when tuned down with open tunings. But I can imagine that SB´s are much better for amplified performance, I should say that the tonality of this guitar was very well balanced.
My personal favourite would be my old Adamas 1688 (because of the overall quality) with a deep contour body. I´m not so familiar with the newer Ovations, maybe there is such a model?

I forgot to mention that the most "charming" (I can´t say it any other way) Ovation 12string I ever had was a battered old 1115 Pacemaker, today I deeply regret to have given it away. Not a cannon like my Adamas, but so easy to play and a wonderful *complete* sound, the best guitar for jamming and singing with friends late at night at the campfire...

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Yes, it's listed wrong, it's an 1885. It woul be used plugged in in a full band setting, so the shallow bowl might be a blessing.

The asking price is 950 - if the guitar is in good shape, how is that for price?
When I go look at it, anything I should be looking at/for? I'm brand new to the Ovarion thing!

Thanks so much!

I've had the 1885 before and as long as there no neck issues it should be impressive.
Once you go shallow bowl it will be hard to play anything else for a time.

950 for a very good condition Adamas is an excellent price as long as the guitar speaks to you.

You may need to get a set of feedback busters for amplified playing. Al has them on his website lostartvintage dot com.

Guitar sold before I got there - disappointed! Guitar Center had it, and I was going to trade a '61 Reissue SG on it. Oh, well - I guess I'll keep looking. Thanks all!

Not sure if this one is for real, but looks like a sweet deal and easy to order:

That website doesn't have any modified guitars for sale, only the ones they make.I saw an Adamas 1897 on there last week and sent an email, they said they only sell there own guitars now.Basically a bait and switch internet scam if you ask me, that's Zeger guitars and gets a thumbs down from me.
If you don't have your heart set on Adamas plus the budget to get one you could look at an elite 1858 its a shallow bowl 12 string, there's also a Melissa Etheridge Adamas 1598 12 string newly arrived on the GC used website for 999$

This is not surprising, but it looks so real with low shipping costs etc. Wonder what happens if you actually put in your credit card information and submit an order? I am far from being a lawyer, but I think by doing so you are holding up your end of a contract for a sales transaction thay are offering, and therefore they would be obligated to send the guitar or be in breach of contract.

I tried ordering/buying a 1897 SMT I saw on there about a week ago.when I clicked on the paypal link it just diverted me to there home page.I do think its a fraudulent business practice to advertise guitars they don't have, knowing how internet scams and foreign servers operate its probably based in some third world country where you would have no legal recourse.
