(as is common on old Ovations and doesn't affect the sound or playability) The location of the "crack" would also be an important factor. A good close up picture of the guitar top could help make that determination, or you could have the guy check it out at a guitar shop. If it ended up being the worst case scenario and it was cracked all the way through the wood, you would have to get it REALLY cheap to make it worth the cost of sending to the factory (if that was you desire) In most cases the cracks are just finish cracks, which would lower the overall dollar value of the guitar, but not affect its sound. Some people actually think they are cool and add a sort of charachter to the guitar. What ever you do, make sure you know the exact condition of the instrument (preferably through a reputable guitar shop on his end) before you commit.

Some things that to look at in the pics. In pic 4: - The bridge looks like its been reglued down. Note the grey/white at the joint of the bridge to the deck. in pics 4, 6-10: - The reflections show a change in top shape at the cracks. I think these are way more than finish cracks. This guitar is a hurtin' puppy IMHO. Shame.

When you can see the white against the sunburst finish it usually indicates the wood on either side is at a different level, hence a through crack. With the fret wear I would pass. I have repaired a top crack with glue and a couple of cleats and it sounds fine but that crack is close to the body and you would be hard pressed to get a glue syrange and a cleat that close to the edge of the top unless you have really tiny hands :) And it would always show up (even if you glued and cleated it) unless you sent it back to mother to have a new top put on .

I'f one were able to not spend any more than the current price, it could be worth it to somebody to have it repaired by the factory. If it COULD be repaired by just a glue-job, I don't see it being much more than a beater. If it were me,I'd pass and save my cash for something more worth my time ... like one of those textured top 12 strings on this site.

If you Really like it, keep an eye on it. But once it hits $250 plus shipping, you could find one in better condition. I just noticed that you can see the cracks in All the photos of the top... Even guitars I have had that have had cracks... From some angles they looked alright. :p It's a Collector, but not That collectible.

If it is still $177 in the last ten minutes I might bid 200... figuring that I could salvage the case and the parts if I couldn't fix it. But if you are looking for a good guitar, that ain't it. Figure $300 for the guitar, then 3,4, $500 for a MS trip... Plus postage from Canada? Naw... Want a cheap USA shallow bowl? [couldn't find a cheap elite... sorry]
