Tired of strumming your old guitar? Want something different to bring to that next OFC gathering? How about this.

That thing is definitely going to need a new snakeskin. So figure in the cost of a really big python.

Did you ever notice these type instruments always make a sound like witches being boiled alive. How did that ever become the desired tone in that culture? You wouldn't call it "warm", you wouldn't really call it "bright" either. I guess when you're shopping for one of these, you're looking for the right screech.

I can't say I'm great on the okanawan samisen, but I've plunked away at them (and own one) and in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing it really is a beautiful and expressive instrument.

Check out Jing Jing and Hanna O. http://www.amazon.com/Asia-Classics-Vol-Peppermint-House/dp/B00004R...

Of course, it sounds different than what we're used to, what they expect from harmony and melody are different than what we expect.

In fact, it's sad (maybe that's not the right word) but, when you go to asia, and find that even in the most remote places Michael Jackson farting out of speakers.

As to the value of that particular piece in the ad, I don't know, mine was a gift.

Strange instrument (to Westerners, anyway) indeed. But I'll bet it has the usually high Japanese craftsmanship and attention to detail.
