I looked up this serial number (for a balladeer 4861) and its not listed... does that mean that Ovation made some outside of the USA in 1986?

I think the Balladeers beginning with "4" were assembled in Korea.

Which means the serial numbers don't map to the build year the way US models do.

Does this make the guitar worth less? How about playability?

Can't tell w/o looking at the guitar. And by worth less, it depends on how much you paid for the guitar or how much the seller wants for the guitar, or... well, you get the picture....

I bought what looked like a Balladeer new in 1986, with a similar s/n but it was called a Pinnacle and made in Japan. I think it was a 4681, but may have started with a 3.

The ovation site and Jerome's site do not mention these early Japanese Pinnacles, but if the guy I sold it to still has the guitar, I'll get some photos. It was a brown-bowl SSB.

This Is definitely an ovation - sure looks like one in the photo below:

I'm trying to decide if it's a waste of time or not but even the Korean balladeers of today are selling for $600-$700. My friend has one and it's awesome.

Yes, that is the Korean made Balladeer. They were obviously trying the standard Balladeer build in various locations at that time.

According to the price list in the Reference section, they were made from 86-89. The Pinnacles started about the time the 4861s stopped.

Hell, for $100 you can't do better for a beater/campfire/beach guitar. Go for it. I doubt you'd have trouble getting your money back if you decide to flip it later.

My objective. Great question. I don't know, all I know is, whenever I see an Ovation come up on CL anywhere near me, I want to buy it. I stay away from celebrities though (mainly because of what I read

Im always looking for seagulls too but they never come up.

4861's have Solid Tops and either an OP24 or an OP24+...
If the action is good and the top isn't all cracked, I would say buy it.

And I would continue to buy the $300 Legends too.

Thats funny. I have the same problem with motorcycles. These hobbies/obsessions have taken the place of chasing women, i suppose - now that i am married with children.
Thanks for the thought provoking question :)

Jay Leno was speaking about his auto/motorcycle collection...

"You either spend your money on drugs or women or something else... This is something else"

As soon as I heard that I thought that he put into words my GAS problem.

Back in 2005, after I had been "clean" for a year-and-a-half I bought a $97 pseudo-Strat...
I figured that I could spend my money on something productive besides beer, drugs and women. In 2006 I bought an Ovation. These keep me outta trouble and keep my priorities straight. :p

BTW-- That first Ovation was a 4861 Korean Balladeer.

Gone now...
