| I am packing a 12 string for shipment within the U.S.. It will be in an Ovation HSC and then peanut packed within a cardboard shipping carton. Should I fully detune/slack the strings or just drop them down a couple of steps.
sorry newbie at shipping... like getting guitars, hate getting rid of them.

Lighten up the strings but not totally - I go with DD GG DD GG BB DD for a 12. This is Open G (on Gsus for us church band people).
Ovation case that fits and pad just under the headstock with paper, towel or better yet bubble wrap.
Use a guitar shipping box - GC's back door has piles of them. Put extra cardboard to pad in front, back and the sides. Balled up newspaper is better than the popcorn crap cause it stays in position. Pad the bottom of the box and then put the guitar and case inside. Pad over the top before closing the box. Use the clear packing tape instead of masking or duct tape.
Remove all previous addresses or GC gets a new 12 string they won't know where to hang! |

Location: SE Michigan | Call me a fanatic, But I have shipped numerous guitars without a problem, but my methods are a bit extreme:
(1) partially detune, maybe about 1/2 the tension.
(2) Wadded newspaper or bubblewrap under the headstock filling open the space.
(3) The entire case goes into a large lawn-leaf garbage bag and gets taped shut - this is in case of water damage but also keeps the packing peanuts away from the guitar case, having to pick fragments of styrofoam off of a new case just pisses people off. The bag also helps keep the humidity stable.
(4) I then tape a layer of foam or bubblewrap to the tip and bottom edge of the case (outside of the grabage bag), in case it gets dropped on it's end.
(5) I fold two cardboard triangles (with the grain) the exact thickeness of the box, kind of like little pillars, then tape these to the case (outside the garbage bag)where the bouts narrow. These help should something heavy be placed on the flat side of the box and also keep the case centered in the box sideways.
(6) I then slide the whole mess into a guitar box and fill with packing peanuts.
When the buyer gets it he can slide it out and just cut the garbage bag off and toss the mess in the trash, the case will be clean and dry. I know it's a bit extreme, but I have shipped several high end guitars and never had a problem. |

Location: SE Michigan | Oh yes, say what you want about their guitars, but Taylor makes the finest shipping boxes in the business, I have scrounged a few of them from GC. You could ship spent fuel rods in those things and they would be perfectly safe. |

| Kind of a bummer letting her go,
but seeing the others post up on ebay after mine listed at least gives me some hope that I will find another to stand in for her when we're a little more solid here.

Location: Minden, Nebraska | IMHO, take all tension off the strings. The strings pull on the top, and increased pull on the top is likely to increase vulnerability to the impact cracks to which Ovations are prone. If the carton allows it, add all extra protection to the face side of the case to prevent impact. Don't worry about the bowl side.
FWIW, I have shipped hundreds of Ovations and many of them globally. I do know a bit about this topic. |
