I don't know about the history that much other than I met the gentleman who made the Messina guitar. My favorite part of that guitar is the feel (and of course sound) but it feels like no other Deacon. The best word I can come up with is "inviting." Cosmetically, the neck is my favorite part. For some reason Jim Messina returned the guitar to Ovation. Not sure if he didn't like something about it, or maybe he just thought it was too nice to tour with, or or or... all speculation. It's one helluva guitar, his loss, my gain. I really don't think the pickguards came from the same wood, as I believe (not sure) that they were made at much different times, several years apart. I guess if people are going to snarf my pictures without permission, I should put up better ones huh??

I have the two pics cojoined and placed on my monitor to provide inspiration. The Deacon projects I'm working on will have walnut laminated to plastic pickguards. The 6 string (I bought the body from you!) looks fairly close to the Messina model - minus the flamed neck of course. If I am at fault for pick-pocketing-pics then I need to apologize to Samova, StandingO, Tony C and a cast of many - None were used for profit - only for my own entertainment and GAS encouragement! You do have a lovely stable of photos! Any opinions on the wood grain being the same or not?

On closer inspection, those pickguards do look remarkably similar. Not same wood, but same... same which is wierd. I'd love to see a closeup of the Rickard one, because there are some distinguishing characteristics that I can't imagine being the same on two pieces of wood... yet they are.. Note the grain stripes, color and spacing from left to right. Note the darker grains between the pickups especially under the EAD. Note the lighter tone to the right along the entire lower bout. This is really odd.

(think UK-II) I had to look again just to make sure. It appears to be a thin wood laminate adhered to a white/brown/white pickguard material. The white layers of the pickguard are paper-thin. At close inspection, the laminate does seem to be wood, complete with imperfections and varied thickness. Only realized with a 5x magnifier, but it looks real to me. I don't take this guitar out often, so thanks for starting this thread. I had forgot about the MOP inlay dots and MOP diamond on the wood (same as pickguard) truss rod cover. The way the fretboard rounds around to the neck, the perfect action.... whew... I need a cigerette :) mkb

I could never copy that neck but the inlays look like a worthy challenge! I can beg if needed and since I got the body from you, it is technically part your DNA! :D
