Imitation, flattery, and all that jazz.

if a les paul was $400 in 84 then I should have bought a ton of them.

Nice guitar but why?

I noticed the reso that BruDev was asking about was made by the same company as this one, Eastwood Guitars. Went to their website and found they make replicas. They are a Canadian Co. I would guess they have them made in Korea or China.

This looks like a Chineese guitar. Not enough of a copy to sue over but then they'd never do that anyway, not worth the effort for a dead product.

Is it just me or is the upper horn way too long. Looks nice and all, but there are some "attention to detail" things they missed. I think those "missed" items are what made the GP what it is/was. Things like the way the heel is, the finish (this burst doesn't look as good as the originals) and of course the orignal pickups and bridge, and most importantly, I think the balance of the Ovation headstock. I really like the Ovation headstock. I think too many guitar companies have been "stuck" with a headstock that is their trademark, yet doesn't really fit every guitar them make. However, I think it's a matter of opinion and taste too. I think as example the standard Gibson headstock belongs on the Flying V whereas the pointy V headstock would look better on a Les Paul.

Anyway, I wonder what the price of these copies are.

as far as I can see.. there are several differences, just a few:
- there seems to be something "wrong" with the upper horn
- the bridge seems not to be in the middle of the body (upper side smaller than downside??)
- the position of the switch is changed
- the bridge itself is different
- the finish
- the bindings should be yellow
... several little differences ..

but in the sum.. there is a big difference.. it is not a GP...

the GP has charm and harmony.. it is not a single point that makes the GP a GP...

IMHO this copy can't compete...

trying to copy the GP this company made the fault not to have a look on the entire guitar.. there are other axes around that do not try to copy anything, but have a own great look (and sound) ... for example I like the look of the Ibanez SZ 520.. nut never had the opportunity to play one

I agree with CW.....if the product rivaled and took away revenue then a lawsuit would be in order. But when you have a inferior product....ie. a replica that can't rival the real deal then why worry.

:D

I think the point that Ovation doesn't make Solid Body Electrics anymore is also an issue. They are unable to sell and make revenue on an item they no longer manufacture. So even if the said electric came close to looking like an original, as long as it didn't have the name Ovation then I'm not sure Ovation would be that concerned. Unless the are planning on tryingto reissue some of those electrics in the near future. I could be wrong but I just don't see that happening.
