Location: N W Ohio | Ok, recent postings here and hanging out with a buddy that has a uke, I want one. Never had one and can't play one (really don't think I can play guitar sometimes)but none the less I want a uke. I'd love an O but don't know whether I can sell my wife on the $150 or so for an Applause. Any suggestions for a short term relief for UAS(uke syndrom)? |

Location: Midland, MI | Steve (what is the *deal* with this infestation of Steve's?)...if you can play guitar, you can play a uke. I can have you playing a song on the uke in less than 60 seconds. I kid you not.
Get yer uke.
First string, third fret. That gives you a C chord.
Strum on the beat (quarter notes).
Sing, 'Row, row, row your boat...'
No kidding. 60 seconds and you're playing uke. Get the kids to do it in a rondo (or canon or whatever the heck that's called) and you'll have a blast. Playing just one chord!
The household favorite here is 'On Top of Spaghetti' which I've actually managed to sing in C, although I generally do better in G.
As far as the uke...you *have* to find one of the palm tree ukes. Nothing else will do. And when you find one, you merely have to show her the Kamaka's going for $500 and the Martin's going for $2500 and you're golden.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Speaking of Uke ... Actually today I took delivery of a new Bushman brand uke. It's koa with abalone inlayed binding. Really beautiful and what a great sound. It's a concert size, slightly bigger than a soprano. The thing really sings and it was only $250 with case. I would highly recommend it. It doesn't come close to my Martin, but as a bang-around uke it's really nice. I would also highly recommend looking at Oscar Schmidt ukuleles. For under $100 you can get a really nice soprano, model OU-2 or OU-3. For the money they are really hard to beat. Of course Applause ukes are great and pretty much bullet proof, but there is definately something nice about wood ones. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Yup, It's a Jenny. I never heard of them until I saw them at NAMM. I was impressed with the uke from first sight and knew I had to have one. And with best part is that with the uke they sent me a booklet and poster of the "Jenny" girl. VERY attractive, even more so than the uke. I'm gonna install a pickup in her. |

Now somebody fill me in about this Jenny, I'm a dirty old man after all! Oh by the way I'm still in the uke question mode or at least I was before being sidetracked. |

Actually spent the 4 day weekend at a mountain bike festival and 24 hours race in Tucson. It rained like a holy bitch all weekend, but my Telecaster uke was a HIT. I didn't hear any complaining. |

Location: N W Ohio | Off topic again. Standingovation, I'm also a cyclist,mostly a roadie but do spend a lot of time on my Paramount mountain bike. The mountain's in this part of Ohio are man made or the names of towns. |

Steve, you should also check out the Bushman stuff. I think it's http://www.bushmanmusic.com. Very nice. I'm not a big fan of the Flea/Fluke thingies, but a lot of people like them. I just figure for that kind of money you can get an Applesauce with a real molded shell and non-Australian Pine top. :) |

Location: N W Ohio | Well since I hijacked my own thread, StandingO, NW Ohio is flat as a pancake. You can see for as far as you can see unless the corn is up. Come see us sometime, the Hancock Hundred is one of the oldest (and I think the best)rides in the country. Lots of USCF racing in the area as well, but I don't compete much any more since I've become chronologically challenged. |

Are you anywhere close to Bellevue,Ohio? My wife is from Bellevue....her family owns a 150 acre farm a few miles out of town on county rd.32. If you've ever heard of Seneca caverns, well a portion of the caverns run under their farm!

Location: Midland, MI | Islander, mon frere, you would be surprised just how much fun you can have with a silly old uke. Everyone that finds out I bought a uke laughs. Then they sing along. It's the strangest thing. Stranger yet, one of my cow-orkers actually plays a mandolin! Nobody knew. Guess he was just too ashamed to mention it to anyone.
Look at Kamaka, Martin, Applause (compare with Fluke, the other molded back uke...although in my mind there is no comparison), Hilo, Bushman. Someone makes one that has what you're looking for, in the price range you want. There are apparently a lot of knowledgeable uke people here (but I'm not one of them, having only recently completed my indoctrination in the Cult of Uke)...ask specific questions!
It's like buying a guitar...nobody can tell you which is best for you. :) |
