I was invited to a birthday hoot'nanny for Stephine Thompson, thrown by her husband, Les Thompson ( a friend, former Nitty Gritty Dirt Band member and current owner/producer for Cabin Studios).

There were 30 or more incredibly talented and versitle musicains. I was easliy the least skilled player there, aside from the two year old that was drumming on a chair seat, and even he had this cool off beat thing going...

The music ranged from Jazz to Old Time, all acoustic, all mic'd. The array of guitars present was also very impressive. In addition to the antique Martins, Gibsons, high end Taylors and costum made Olsons there was...

one Ovation.

A 1537, belonging to me, the least skilled player there.

Some folks didn't even know what the hell it was, (that gives you an idea as to the depth of pure acoustic devotion of many of these folks), others were curious about the sound.

To a person, every one of them commented on how beautiful the guitar looks. And to a person, thrilled by it's sound.

We played until 4am Sunday morning, welcomed Steph into her fifties and even the remedial player with wierd guitar had a blast.

(...BTW among all the 4 grand+ guitars present, many folks couldn't believe that my guitar was purchased for under a grand)

Yes, it is fun when that happens but it seems to happen way too often. Not my problem anymore.
I remember being at Winfield in 84 and going around the campfires at night with a 1537. The best comment I remember was a bubba saying, "Golllie, That Ovation sure is loud, I didn't think they were very loud, that's why they all came with pickups in them"

A terribly good fiddle/mandolin player, said, "It sounds beautiful, but it doesn't have a belly button!?"

I wasn't witty enough to reply immediately, though thought about saying something about a petri dish.

...and

I have to give this crowd credit for looking and hearing, and not dismissing out-right something "strange"

I've picked up a guitar several times thoughout my life, in many unsuccessful attempts to learn how to play. This time I think it will stick. I'm making much more progress and enjoying it everyday. Maybe it's a maturity thing. Agewise, I'm right in the middle of our most popular demographic.

Anyway to keep this thread on topic, the first time I saw an Ovation I knew that someday I would own one. I'm haven't made it there yet, but the day will come. I don't understand why they haven't become more universally accepted. They play great, sound wonderful, and to my eye, look 'right'. The roundback drew me to it immediately as I've always had trouble getting comfortable with a standard dreadnought.

Stopped into the music store tonight (Fullers Music, New Bern, NC) to see what was to see. They had a C779LX, Legend 1771LX, 6778LX. a KOA Celebrity, several other Celeb's and a few Applauses at the low end.

(edited to correct a model #)

Played (loose use of the term) the LX's and the KOA. My impression was that the 6778LX was the sweetest of the bunch. It played effortlessly, better than the 1771LX but didn't have quite the sound of the CE. It also didn't cost $1400.

Just some impressions of someone of limited experience, but one of high demands.

(still looking for a 1778LX to take for a spin)
