Joined: April 2004 Posts: 36 | Im thinking of loosing a few pounds and go cracy on a porridge diet, but im not really sure if i should. There is this Ovation Legend 1617 from the 80´s that might just tempt me to do so. since i only know solidbody Ovations, i really come short in judging the value of this instrument. What would be reasonable to pay for such a thing? Since we are all fellow Ovationeers i trust you wont snatch it before i get a chanse to decide. http://www.finn.no/finn/bap/object;pdc=1109954861429?finnkode=51662... I have not tried the guitar yet, i would need to jump a plane to get to that part of the country so i have no idea of the feel. Personally i would prefer a solidbody feel to the neck, so i really dont know if this is the one i should get. Can someone give me some feedback on the 1617 playability and value? thanks Jan9

No idea how many Rubles that would translate to. If you are set on a "Solid Body" feel you may want to try the Elite T, Elite LX or the Flame T as their neck profiles are closer to the solids. Overall Ovation necks kick butt on other brands but those I mentioned tend to feel more familiar to the solid body players.

I went to the Ovation Discontinued site and realized that the picture I have been looking at is diff. What kind of bracing does mine have and is it AAA top or not? I thought all 1617's were alike, obviously they are not. Didn't mean to hijack this thread, but an inquiring mind wants to know. thanks

It's got a AAA spruce top. I'm not certain how to explain the VT bracing pattern. It's asymetrical, closed more on the treble side, open more on the bass. There were different levels of the VT pattern, from VT-8 (on shallow bowl steel strings, VT-10 on the Concert Classic, and VT-11 on the Legends. The Custom Legends have always had the "A" bracing pattern, and in 1980, Ovation went to that pattern for the vast majority of their steel strings. With my ear, I've never cared for the VT bracing pattern guitars (even tho' I've owned one for 26 years), but it's a purely subjective thing. I know people who love them. If you want to send me a fax number, I'll see if I can find some good pics of the bracing patterns and send them to you.
