Ovations seem to have a little larger strap "button" that seems to do just fine (snug) with most straps.

The problem is that you only believe that until one of your babies goes into free fall - kinda like the notion of backing up your hard drive ... Now, I too have become a straploc (Dunlop) Nazi! All of my straps and guitars have them. For me, they are like seat belts in your vehicle. Once you have a potentially, or actually horrifying experience happen, you'll never leave home without them. They are the cheapest kind of insurance considering what you have paid to acquire your babies! :(

Cheap insurance indeed:- what's an extra GBP15 (USD30 ish) to help prevent a needless bounce of a GBP1,500 (USD3,000 ish) guitar? I'm with T28 - it's the first thing I do. Plus the fact, it looks so much cooler when you're setting up for your gig just clicking a strap into place rather than fiddling with buttons and strap-holes! (not that I'm image conscious or anything...) JB

"For a long time, I thought that the flared Dunlop straploc buttons that the mothership puts on the guitars was plenty" I had no idea that the larger strap "buttons" on Ovations are a part of the Dunlop strap-lock system. Is this true? I have never seen where you could buy the rest of the system or do you have to buy the whole thing then just use the part that attaches to the strap?

And yes, you DO have to buy the complete set and mount the "mating" components to your strap. In the past, I've taken the leftover "button" parts and mounted them to the wall with a screw . . . gives you a place to "hang" a StrapLock-equipped strap, if you so desire . . .

The downsides: When you put the guitar in the O OHSC with the strap on, it exteds out the extra 1/2" or so. Sometimes modification is required to the contour of the case. You always need to disconnect the strap pin at the heel of the neck and lay out the strap in the case. With my Elite's Leather strap (Woody Strap?) I have to remove the strap completely since there is not enough room for both. On solid bodies I have to remove the Straploc washer set and use a 9/16" washer as well as trimming down the meat of the strapwhere it comes into a tight fit at the neck heel. To install a Straploc Button on a "Vintage" O, you need to shave the head on the original fasteners. The new fasteners have slightly larger threads. I like Cliff's tip providing a Strap collection mounting bracket. Soon to hit Fleabay - I now have a small collection of "Rare" original Ovation - not Fender/Martin/Gibson original strap buttons and fasteners from the 70's and 80's. Blurry photos to follow!

It's just a smooth, concave peg that accepts the lock device, but isn't very good for holding a traditional strap at all. I bought a couple of sets by mistake, and that's where I got the idea of mounting them to the wall. They work pretty good for that 'cause they're not real obtrusive looking. I'll get around to posting a pic of my hanging set-up . . .

But occassionally they don't quite lock in place...you think they do, but the suddenly it slips out moments later. Too freaky for me. I switched to Schaller straplocks. The ends that remain on your strap not only has the center male part that locks into the hole in the strap button on the guitar (like the dunlop), but also cups around the outer part of the strap button, which is extra reassuring. The tension release on the Schaller is much tighter too. I love 'em. If you're into unique stuff, Q-parts has Schaller type strap buttons with unique ring choices in different designs and colors...abalone, gold, black, silver. Just a nice custom flair. I have the gold firewheel on my adamas' leather strap, and it looks great with the gold hardware on the guitar. http://www.qparts.com/product/straplocks.html#metal They also have a ton of unique volume buttons and pickguards if you're into that kind of thing. Too much for some, I'm sure. www.Hammerheadmusic.com is a dealer of q-parts, and they also sell on ebay pretty cheap. Amazon carries them too, but for a few bucks more. You can also purchase the designer straplock rings separately if you already have a straplock system. Johnny

Joined: November 2003 Posts: 11039 Location: Earth·SolarSystem·LocalInterstellarCloud·Local Bub | I was thinking about Cliff's suggestion about fastening extra strap buttons to the walls for strap storage.... I have problems with my preferred stap fitting in my case, so I usually carry it elsewhere. Then a thought hatched...what about strategically fastening those leftover stap bottons to the outside of the case and carry the stap there? Could even become useful to sling the case over the shoulder. Has anyone ever tried this??? Any suggestions? (Alteration to my case is not an issue, as it is old and battered, but still functions well)

The Collings use El Dorado straps (no locks) and the foscilized ivory or ebony strap buttons that StewMac sells. The Nationals get played sitting down.
