How unique do you want it to be?

By his own addmission, he says it is a one-off built outside of the factory using possibly stolen parts.

I would say that is fairly unique.

I have a 5 string ac/el bass. I bought it for my wife, it was too big for her to play and she never really got used to it. She also never really got used to the 5th string. mine is -4
no big story except the 5 is very rare.

I was wondering after taking a look again at the Ovation acoustic basses on the bay right now I see a nice but cheaper model Celebrity Bass running as well. I am wondering if the Celebrity line ever offered a 5 string bass? This Bass in question sure does look an awful lot like a celebrity bass with the decal revoved from the inside.......

Would any of you Ovation experts know if there is a way I could identify this bass as an American made Bass compared to the Celebrity models???

I hate to pay for a Rare custom built Ovation bass to find out it was actually a cheaper fairly common version.
Thanks .... All kiddin ass/ide... I really need some expert opinions here

Randy,
it's quite simple:

The American made Elite or Viper basses have 24 frets.

The Celebrity basses have 19, 21 or 22 frets. There were 4- and 5-string models (CC274 and CC275).

ALL-right! Karl, Thanks Man Knew somebody could tell these from a photo... I really like this bass. I have no guitars with the traditional sort of sunburst color like this one. It will be used quite a lot in an acoustic set I am working out now.
Bru Dev Thanks for the post I have been checking Ovation Acoustic Basses for a while but I had not found this one until I read your post. Sure hope I am not stepping on any toes here? Nice Bass, tickles my fancy, goin for it

Al - you make it sound like it doesn't get played too much. You already have all my spare cash - I don't suppose it's Buy One Get One Free week at Vintage Guitars is it?

Just to back up what's already been said, Celebrity definately did do a 5-string version as I have one. This isn't one, as it has the "Elite" triangle fret markers, rather than the diamonds 'n' dots of the Celebs.

You don't see that many 5-string acoustic basses, even fewer Ovation ones, and even fewer Elite ones so it's probably pretty rare in that respect.

Case in point: I had a falling out with my local music store owner when trying to get him to order some strings for mine - he wouldn't order strings as "no-one does 5-sting acoustics". I suggested (politely, so far...) that he could try contacting Kaman as he's an Ovation dealer, and they would be able to at least direct him towards a set. He said that they couldn't help, as "no-one does 5-string acoustics". I said (in a strained manner) that they would help, as I have one of theirs, but he re-iterated that "no-one does 5-string acoustics". Whereupon I offered (at volume by this stage of the conversation) to bring in my guitar to show him, and was then told that I wouldn't, because I didn't have one, because "no-one does 5-string acoustics".

He doesn't trust guitarists, as he's a Keyboard player, and only stocks them because they keep the till ticking over. That's the problems of a small Island - it's the only place to shop.

This was 6 years ago, and I can only go back now that the vendor concerned now that he has little to do with the day-to-day. Thank goodness for the net!

I think I may have got lost in the story there, apologies. There was a point, honest.

JB Now that's funny! They always shoot the piano player don't they?

I bought it last night. This bass has a pretty cool story that goes with it. And yep It is a custom built Elite. From a guy who was a supervisor and luthier for Kaman.
It is a one-of-a-kind. Hope it plays as good as it looks.

Cliff I just tried the link in the first post? It is still working?
If you can't get in for some reason go to Ebay click on Advanced search and here's the number to type in 7314526125 I can't wait to get this thing! Not sure what to call it. It is an Elite parts project but not an actual bought & sold Ovation product? It is a One-of for sure.

No toes. I've just been downsized for the second time in the last 4 months, so I'm in conserve mode.

FWIW - This is my latest guitar/bass purchase:
