I once purchased something like car wax that worked really well to clean up cruddy old nitro guitar finishes. However, I don't see any on their website. Anyone know what that might have been? Also open to alternate suggestions.

I have bought Meguiar's products from StewMac that worked well on guitars. They are also now available in a Fender licensed/logo container for even more money.

While we're talking about cleaning guitars, what's the best way to clean a maple fretboard on a Strat?

I think fretboard cleaning has been batted around in a number of threads. I use lemon oil, but that is not universally affirmed. Naphtha is what many use.

So would the Meguire's Swirl Remover be good enough to remove nicotine and general gunk or should I use one of the heavier compounds first?

Why would you ever want to clean a maple neck?
Anyhow if it's a Fender I'd use lemon pledge, not the naptha which I would think would attack the lacquer, but that would work fine on a Viper with the polyester finish.

Dubbya 2;

I don't mind the vintage patina of an old Strat but this thing is just plain skanky dirty...it'll still have plenty of character when I'm done with it!
Lemon Pledge would sure be handy to get but doesn’t that have silicone in it?

Naptha doesn't attack laquer at all. When handling a piece between coats of laquer, its commonplace to degrease the item with naptha before the new coat of laquer is applied.

On a Fender fretboard - maple that is - they're either laquer, or poly. Strings off, regular old polish/cleaner du jour. Ebony, rosewood, other bare wood boards some REAL lemon oil is good.

Most lemon oils are just turpentine, mineral spirits etc... with a lemon scent, and perhaps some miniscule percentage of lemon oil.

Swirl remover works "ok", but there was another product... I think it was a plexiglass polish (micro abrasive like swirl remover) that did the cats rosette of a job on poly. Arrgh, the name'll come to me sooner or later.

We used to wipe down the side of a car or truck with naptha before striping/lettering. Cuts through the grease and wax and allows good adherence to the finish without harming it . . .

I've used wd-40 on the fretwire and it works great. No problems.

Especially if you switch the spray cap with one from a can of paint... better spread.
