Hi,

I would like to hear from anyone that has changed their tuning keys. I want to add some planet waves or similar design that eliminates the need to wrap the strings around the string posts. I had a strat plus that had these keys and have missed them ever since that guitar got away. I changed my Martin keys to Waverly's, but the Ovation headstock looks so different. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Brent

The 3x3 Planet Waves tuners have larger buttons than the 6-in-line. Not all that much different than the Schaller tuners. Should work fine.

PS. I like the Planet Waves as well.

Here's a picture of the 3x3 type:

Thanks,

That looks like a good deal...also I did not know what brand of tuning keys the 1777 Legend LX. Those are good keys...Martin ships w/ those. Do all Ovation use these keys?

I believe the newer Ovations use Ping tuners.

Anyone know the diameter of the string post holes? I will post the results of my tuner c/o, as upgraded tuners make a huge difference in tuning accuracy and smoothness. The locking post types will make the dreaded chore of changing strings easier. New strings are the best sound enhancer for any guitar. Just my $.02 worth!

Thanks,
Brent

Brent,

I agree 100% about upgrading tuners. I have done it on all of my lower end acoustics (like my Ibanez AE 6 and 12 string). I have been using the new Grover mini locking rotmatics. Very nice tuners and a direct swap in this case.

It seems to me that most of the holes in the headstocks are 10 mm in diameter. If that is the case with Ovation, then finding replacement tuners should be easy to do. I am happy with what Ovation is supplying.

If you go to www.stewmac.com and look for guitar tuners, you will find a host of options. This is a really nice company in Ohio, and I order from them all the time.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Jim,

So the Grover mini locking rotomatics are a direct swap for my LX. I have bought keys from stewmac also. They are my first choice for instrument parts. Ain't this fun!

Brent,

I do not think the Grover mini rotomatics will be a direct swap, but the full size ones might be. If you go to the StewMac web site and look at all the tuners, you should find something. I like to go with a ratio of 18:1 for replacements as this seems to make tuning more precise.
