Hi Guys, Sorry if you've addressed this before, but I'm new around here ! Two questions :
1. Is there such a difference in sound & build quality between the Korean 12 strings, say cs 247 or 257 & the US built models?
2. Another subject entirely, has anyone played the Adamas Melissa Etheridge 12 string,& is it all the promos tell us it is ? What would the street price of a good second hand model be ?
I've bought the 1985 Collectors 12 string, which I love, but here in Australia you rarely see any US models played, or for sale. The Korean models are more available.

You get what you pay for. Korean models good for the money, in some cases better than other (non Ovation) guitars costing much more. Depends what you are really looking for an how much willing to pay. Not familiar with the ME12, but lots of members here have them. I own elite and adamas 12's and have never played one I didn't like. Dave

While I don't own one, I recently got to play an ME model and it was excellent. Played like butter and filled the room with sweeeeeeet 12 string sounds.

I have sold several of the ME guitars they are great.

the korean instrument is good quality for the money. If you look for used USA models sometimes you can find better deals if you don't care about dings scratches etc.

for the price for a new instrument the korean models are fine.

I own, and have owned, and play both USA and korean models, both ovation and non-ovation, electric and non-electric and I know car analogies are not so great, but it's the difference between a driving a honda and a mercedes. Both excellent quality cars. They'll get you where you want to go, but, admittedly, the used mercedes is nicer, assuming the previous owner cared for it. So my advice is, if you've bought, say at least 2, acoustic guitars in your life, then look around for a used usa made ovation. If you have little experience buying guitars, then buy a new korean model and use it as a trade in when you buy the USA model when you want to upgrade.

Gustav, I own a Melissa Etheridge 12-string, built in 2001. The current model only has the epaulet on the bass side, but mine has both. I have the Optima pre-amp, also.

It sounds quite wonderful. However, be advised that it has a more EVEN (not bass-heavy, not treble-heavy) sound than the wood-top Ovation 12-strings. I was in our local Guitar Center(a national chain of music stores) Sunday with my wife, and I played a Legend LX 12-string for her---she noticed that it has a very different sound than the ME 12-string. Not worse, not better, DIFFERENT. It sounds pretty much like the regular Adamas CVT 12-string.

A disappointment to me is that the ME 12-string does not get the 5-piece neck and the black-face headstock. This differentiates it from the regular Adamas CVT 12-string, but IMHO, it makes the ME LESS desireable than the base model from an appearance standpoint.

For the price of the ME, I personally would go for the 12 String LX. It's half the price new, and sounds and plays terrific. I actually like the feel of the neck and action on the LX, better than the Adams. IMHO its one of the best 12 string guitars I ever played.

I gotta agree with Tommy M on the LX 12 over the ME 12.

But just so you guys know, the best 12 string Ovation ever built was the Adamas I 12 string. Hands down. Others come close and are great, but it's the best.
