hi you all,
i have a problem in finding out how old the breadwinner is that i just bought on ebay. the serial number says E 00090. so it is maybe early '75. but it has nylon saddles and the big pick ups. resonator is selling his pre '75 breadwinner on ebay now with a 4 digit serial number but small pick ups and brass saddle.
on baron audio is written:
2 high-output double-coil humbuckers with 12 individual 3/16" magnets wired in series with 10,000 winds per coil. (Early Breadwinners had Toroidal Single Coil pickups with 12 individual magnet poles, 6 rectangular permanent mounted and 6 adjustable. Patented adjustible tri-mount

and:
Standard Ovation with Brass plate and saddles adjustible for action and intonation with Patented adjustible tri-mount. (Early Breadwinners had Nylon Saddles)

what does "early breadwinner" mean exactly?

thanks for helping.

Oli,
Check with Mr, Ovation(Miles Baron) that's his collection that you were looking at. He would probably be able to help you put a date on it and answer your questions.

Although there are examples of just about every configuration, a good bet to spot an early breadwinner is....

- The Large Toroidal Pickups
- Nylon Saddles were very early, but used later too so a counter indication would be that Brass saddles didn't happen until later.
- The Jack being on the end of the body instead of on the pickguard.

There are a couple of other details like a narrower headstock on early ones also. If you look in the reference section, that E + 5 digit serial number states Feb of 1975 and as it has 90 as the last two digits.... you are probably safe in assuming it's from early 1975.

I bought E00463 June 9 1973.

Look at the note on this page of the manual.

Makes me think that the first production S# was E00021.

I don't think I've ever seen a large single coil type without leading zeros.

Maybe CWK2 can shed some more light? I will also go check some serial numbers actually on guitars.

hi,
thanks for the quick replies.

if brudev bought his in '73, that means the reference is maybe wrong?

@miles: it has the large toroidal pickups, the nylon saddle and the output jack at the end of the body.

Mine is # 906. Without an "E" or zeros.

CWK2 said in an earlier post that ones without the 'E' in front where special serial numbers that where used by the engineering department.

Which would indicate that yours is not a standard production model.

I bought ser. # 1139 used in 1991. It has single coils, jack on the pickgard, Brass saddles, no Ovation logo on the head stock, and the strap button is under the neck. Eccept for the back of the neck the white finish is bumpy. I had never sean another breadwiner or deacon except a book I have showing A breadwinner pickup (single coil), that must be in a deacon.

Gene,
In my opinion, Those white breadwinners are great looking guitars. Indestructable finish!
