Does anyone know why Ovation 12 strings changed for 12 frets clear to 14 frets clear back in the 80's ???

Perhaps it was part of the effort to become "the Electric Player's Acoustic"??

What self-respecting HairMetalBand is gonna play their "PowerBallads" on a whimpy 12-fret neck without a cutaway (even though the only thing they played was 1st position G and Csus9 chords ;-) ?

This is just a guess.

Ovation changed to 14 frets clear of the body at the same time that they went with a Kaman bar in the neck of the 12 string models. There's a big difference in the way the neck is attached to the body with the Kaman bar necks. Perhaps using the Kaman bar allowed for the additional structural stability needed for the longer neck.

There are always exceptions: I had an Adamas II with standard k-bar 14 fret neck. Had the neck replaced with a 14 fret truss rod neck. How day do dat ???
