It was bigger than ever and better than ever.

Wait for it - there were 17 (SEVENTEEN) Ovations on one of the stands. From celebrities to LXs.

Played an LX - couldn't stand the silly glossy neck. Horrible.

P{layed my first ADM II - couldn't stand that silly shaped neck.

V-shaped, 5 piece, oiled. Does it for me to the exclusion of almost all other guitars in the universe.

Why they would want to change this is beyond my comprehension.

I guess I am - after 40 years my whole approach to playing changed the minute I wrapped my hand around that neck. It is just perfection. With the result that even Ovation variations on it don't feel right. I was particularly disappointed in the ADM II, cos it sounded FANTASTIC. Maybe I could get used to it - anybody wants to lend me one for 6 months I'll give it a whirl.

I did fall in love with a Macafferi style guitar made by Marcel Dupont. I came so close to buying it - my 9 year old was trying to drag me away saying "mum won't understand". Then he sat and played it for 10 minutes and I had to drag him away. I spent a long time talking to the guy and I got an invite to the workshop just outside Cognac when we are there in the summer. I suspect this is not yet dead. I just gotta make sure that SWMBO has done the distillery tour before we head for the luthier's place. It was just fabulous. Satin neck with a very soft V. Reminded me of something......

Is this similiar in appearence to the Gitane repros?? At one of our recent jams two guys brought Selmer Jazz and Maccaferri repros. The Selmer had a small egg shaped sound hole and the Mac had a gapping mauw of one. Both had bridges that went most of the way across the lower bout.

Those guys played the hell out of them, but they couldn't be heard over the numerous steel strings through the PA.

Very similar - this was the D hole, but not as big as some. It was the nylon string version that I loved - the steel string version has a narrower neck and it didn't feel right on that style of guitar. Guitar Buyer mag did a giant test last year and the Dupont models blew all the others clean out of the water. Only 2 Collings and 2 Santa Cruz acoustics had ever achieved a 5 star rating before - 3 Duponts got it in the same test. They make flattops, archtop jazzers, classical and flamenco guitars as well as the gypsy models. They are all incredible quality - and lap slide guitars as well.
Interestingly the nylon model, although braced differently to the steel model, still has a truss rod to allow for using real hard tension nylon strings to get that Django twang. Beautiful design.
The guy told me that there are only 14 people working for the company, so the chances of sneaking one out under my sun hat in August are better than average.

Jeff, if the uke attack is really hitting you, go for the Kamaka Concert Koa or the Bushman Mahogany Concert.

I am still debating on which one to get.

My Davy Stuart Mando is due to show up sometime in the very near distant future also (This month hopefully!).

Stephen,
I was hoping for a Maccaferri style Uke to dangle between Dave W and Cruster, just to see what would happen...

It's the evil scientist in me...sorta like a kid burning ants with a magnifying glass.
