Channel surfing this am and saw Glen Campbell on GAC Classics. He was doing Southern Nights, with a full orchestra, playing a blue Hamer 12 string.
Didn't catch the name of the album it was from, would be nice to have a DVD. Looked like an O was on a stand in the background.

I love that Jerry Reed lick in that tune, where it goes up and down at the same time.

Took me over 25 years, but I finally nailed that riff last year thanks to CMT's Inside Fame. In the episode dedicated to GC, he's demonstrates the riff in it's entirety and unobstructed.

There is a DVD. Not sure if it's that exact concert but GC plays a blue Hamer 12 and a Viper for Classical Gas and others.

Southern Nights is my favorite GC tune.

Yep. It has the very creative title of

......wait for it...........

"Glen Campbell In Concert"

2001 Image Entertainment. High Five Television

It's an excellent concert. All the hits, lots of extras and Glen is in fine form with both guitar and voice.

Yeah Paul, I'll take a copy of that. As I heard the story Glen got it from Jerry and put it in the song which was written by Alan Toussaint, I think.(Have I got that right?)

What's so funny about a Beta Max? I just picked up one used, cheap, and can now start watching videos. I'm heading over the the video store tonight.

I think so. Glen has an orchestra backing him aswell as his band.

He plays a Viper, a (blue?) Strat with Lace sensors and a blue Hamer 12 string. Very good show.

If it isn't the South Dakota concert, that concert is GREAT and is worth getting on VHS. What looks like a blue Viper is probably a Bluebird.

In the South Dakota concert (2001), Glen is playing a natural face Viper acoustic, a Custom Shop blue Strat, and the Hamer 12 string (blue) that was built especially for him when his last Bluebird 12 bit the dust.

Paul

I have a tape of that South Dakota concert and you are right, there aren't any Bluebirds on it. Somewhere I have seen or taped a concert where he plays what looks like a Bluebird, but I can't find it right now.

moody, when someone like glen campbell has a hamer 12-string specially built for himself, i'm curious how tedious and specific it gets?..do you think he has exact tolerances and specs for the width of the neck and nut, size of the fret wire and bridge assembly, etc, or is it basically custom electronics installed on a factory guitar?..

Jeff Dayton, who used to play guitar for Glen, made an appearance on this board last year. He said that when Glen's last Bluebird 12 was eaten by the airlines, he took the body to Hamer to duplicate the size. They found a chrome 12 string bridge/saddle at Ovation. He said that when Glen got the guitar he had the volume control moved to where the tone control was located and the original volume contol hole plugged up. But he didn't say anything more than that.

I think Jeff said the neck width and profile was copied from the Bluebird as well.
