I always thought that prototype models of a product are what gets made until they work out all the problems.

Some prototype are really good guitars.
This adamas proto #19 was given by M.Charles Kaman to Marcel Dadi. Marcel play this adamas on his lp's "Dadi a Nashville vol I & II".
And you can see this great guitar on the "Dadi's Olympia DVD" from 1988.
Jean Felix Lalanne (french guitar player), the second owner of this guitar said that it's probably one of the greatest he has played...

Brad, a prototype is what is made for evalution of a concept.....in cars, or in guitars. With cars, there are usually a bunch of changes, because an automobile is a complicated piece of hardware(and getting more so). With a guitar, it could be possible to get it right the first time.....

Also, prototypes are usually more handmade than the production models, with more care taken. A prototype guitar could be quite a sweet piece....

Proto's can turn out to be worth much more than a production piece, as they are sometimes one-offs. I have several pocket knives that are proto's and they are worth way more than the production knives. :D

Proto's are usually different from production pieces lookswise also. :) That's why I like 'em. :D

They usually are testing out some concepts or designs. Many times these will have machined parts rather than moulded parts. In most all cases I would think that they are more interesting and ultimately worth more than production pieces.

After having just seen/heard Jean Felix Lalanne play this guitar on "Dadi's Olympia DVD", I can agree that this is one sweet guitar...although it probably wouldn't sound as good if I played it!

I have a few prototypes and although they probably don't sound/play any better then some of the nicer production versions, the rarity and history factor adds to the appeal for me.

The appeal of a prototype is that it usually is a totally hand built instrument that have features not usually or not yet included on the standard issue guitars.

Generally these instruments are more desireable to the "collector". Most of these guitars tend to be well built and have good sound although that is just a generalization. Some just have different hardware or custom colors.

IMHO most of the time if the guitar is an experiemtn gone bad it is cut up and thrown in the dumpster, if it had potential and made it out of the factory, then you probably have a real gem.
