Hi guys, been lurking a while, wanted to ask a question!
I have a '93(?) custom balladeer 1860, shallow bowl with the FET 3 pre-amp.
I got it second hand for next to nothing and it's the best buy of my life!
I use it live 3-5 nights a week in the summer season, straight into whatever P.A. the venue has.
I was wondering if It's possible to wire a condenser mic into the pre-amp to run quietly blended with the piezo to get some natural reverb.
Would I need a seperate pre-amp?
Has anyone tried this?
Thanks in advance guys, great forum!

Rich.

I don't think that a condenser mic is the way to go with a shallow bowl Ovation. You will have some feedback issues as well as questionable if any sound quality enhancement. If you want to improve the sound get a dedicated acoustic processor like the Boss AD-3 ($155) or AD-5 ($240) that is designed specifically to enhance piezo pick-up sound. It will give you much more control of the signal going into the PA and some effects that you can add with the footswitch.

At the last Jam, Master Templeman loaned me this really cool little clip-on condensor mic on a small gooseneck. Clipped onto one of the soundholes of my Slot and sounded (I thought) very nice in live (outdoor) application. I believe "Yoga" was the manufacturer, and Master Templeman IS a UK distributor. If your looking for ancillary "colouration", this might be the ticket.

- Does require a seperate mic line (and phantom 28V) tho . .

OK, for what it's worth my opinions on mike/piezo/mag combinations are these. First of all if you are going to have multiple pickup sources on an acoustic instrument they absolutely MUST be on separate and independantly controlable outputs. Secondly internal mikes are more trouble than they are worth, an instruments true tone develops several feet away from the source and internal mikes just don't sound right unless they are in exactly the right place (the margin for error here is huge) They are also prone to feedback and serious phase error. External mikes, clip-on or stand mounted, are a much better bet but they come with their own set of problems, proximity effect being just one. If you play loud, run your monitors loud, or there's a rhythm section, forget it. I can get the Yogas, they cost around £80-ishGBP and they're damned good for the dough. I had Ovation custom build a guitar for me with an OPP/OP50 and an external bridge-mounted condenser on a discreet output. The situations where I can use the mike are few and far between, but it sounds great when I do.

Thanks for the input guys!
I generally play alone, just me and the guitar, or sometimes with a precussionist with a cajon box and a bunch of crazy african instruments!
I want to add some fullness to the tone, preferably not digitally.
I like the idea of a little gooseneck mic maybe with a external pre-amp that would mount on my strap or something, then I could just run another lead into another channel and blend the levels accordingly!
Mr. Templeman, I will p.m. you about the yoga's, thanks for the advice!
Thankyou all guys!
Rich
