I cannot put the GAS off any more for a multi-soundhole Ovation. I am strongly thinking about a 1778 Elite LX. Just looking for opinions on what I can expect from this guitar. I have an '05 Collector, so I am familiar with some of the LX upgrades.......

When I played the 05 Collectors (3 each so far) I thought they where very similar to my 1778LX except for where the sound actually came out. Very responsive to the style and temper you play with!

The 1778T isn't too far off either.

I have the custom elite C778LX. Great guitar. I put Elixir Nanoweb Lights on it and it sings beautifully. Very full sound. Crystal highs, full lows, especially in Drop D tuning. Plug it into any amp (I have a Genz Benz Jr) and you can mold the sound to whatevery you like.

The 1778LX doesn't have the "depth" of sound of the 2005 Collectors. I've played both back-to-back, both with new strings, at my local GC. This is not to say that the 1778LX sounds BAD. It sounds pretty darn good, actually. But it isn't as good acoustically as the 2005-ES, IMHO.

I think the contour bowl will become the standard. Wouldn't be great if they drew line at Hartford and only USA Ovations came with the contour bowl?
That would certainly set the lines apart as we have been suggesting.

I've got a gut level feeling that you'll never see a contoured bowl on an import.

I received my 1778 LX in May 04. I think it was the second one imported into the UK. I waited 12 weeks for delivery. I struggled with the action at first, but removed all shims, which made it much more playable. I gave up with D'Addario EXP 16's (although they sounded good) and tried Rotosound Country Gold 11's and that transformed the guitar into a low action playable tool, with no buzz. I am still sure it can be made better.

I can't say I played that many Ovation's (4 in fact), my friend has I think, an aniversary 1117 model, which plays and sounds great. I have also recently played a Takamine which I was impressed with the sound and playability. The action was not as good up the board, but it has never been set up by a guitar tech.

I still find that after playing for two hours on the 1778 LX, that my fingers needed a rest and out comes the Fender Telecaster and I play on.

I am 70 miles from central London, so I am well away from the terible problems in the city. We all I think knew it was coming and the security forces have already foiled a number of attempts that we were not told about. Either way, my wife travels every other week up to the city to her office in London and went this morning, so life must carry on. I don't like going to London, unless I have to go on business. I lived in central London in the early 70's and it is a different city now.

Thank you all for your good wishes to the people of London.

Piers

Jim D,

Did you end up getting the LX? How does it sound/feel/play to you?
