i'm in the market for a new ovation...i can spend around $1000
i'm trying to find the perfect model for me.
i do have some specific requirements:
-ebony FB and bridge
-i'd prefer a mid-depth bowl
-side sound holes as opposed to center
-i'd really like one with a single strip of bone/tusq as the saddle, not the pyramid type.
-oh yeah...it's gotta be black...
i've narrowed it down to a 1778LX being the closest- only the saddle concerns me a little- seems like there's a lot of room for movement. i also like the CE778...
the 1778T has all the requirements...but i hate the "spackle" finish...
can anyone suggest a better model?
can anyone sell me on the pyramid style saddle on so many of the ovation models? is it tusq? just looks to me as it's not a stable as the single strip saddle...

Grab Dave's (StandingOvation) '05 collectors (in the for sale section) and never look back. Great sounding and playing guitar, lots of bang for the buck, and right in your price range. |

Location: Warren,Pa. | Of all the p/u's Ovation has made, the one you're avoiding is their best (don't know what you're referring to by "room for movement"). They don't move. It's a very "hot"p/u. At $1,000 you have a lot of top quality guitars to choose from! Welcome. John <>{ |

Location: GA USA | Hal Jordan, I'd say anything in green would be perfect for you. But for goodness sake, stay away from yellow. And you are wise not to choose a guitar with a wood back.

Location: Anchorage, Alaska | If Dave,s 2005 Collectors is still available for a grand, that would be the one for sure! It does have a center hole, but it would be hard to find anything better for that price. |

My green Ovation's Tight! :p as i do live in fear of yellow guitars...
i do own a fabulous D28, which is my main guitar along with a Godin multiac grand concert SA. i need another guitar to run my synth, and there's no way i'm strappin' a GK2 to my beloved D28.
i'm looking for an ovation to serve as as giging guitar that plays like an electric.
i'm one of those guys who loves all(well, lots o guess) guitars for their strengths.
ovations to me are like an electric gutiar with great acoustic sound- but not as great as my Martin(oohhh, i can feel the evil stares at your screen as you read this :) ) |

Location: GA USA | Actually, HJ, I went to GC and played a mess of Martins and Gibsons. Most of the Martins played like butter. I just wanted you to know you weren't the only geek here. |

Location: SoCal | I fail to see where the "trouble" is in talking about Martins on the Ovation site, except that it is the Ovation site. Most people here respect Martins, unlike the Martin site where there is no respect for Ovations. |

Location: south east Michigan | I don't think you'll see that kind of trash talk, knee-jerk reaction here. My acoustic duo partner has a D-28 that just rocks. There is a Taylor 614C at my local Guitar Center that is very nice, but just way to expensive.
The biggest gripe that "we" have is the misconception that Ovations are good only when plugged in. If you get hooked up with an LX or a 2005 Collectors you'll see what we mean. I hope your hang around long enough to learn about the Adamas line. That is a whole 'nother level. |

That is a whole 'nother level. i like the adamas stuff...very nice, also very expensive. i didn't mind dropping $1700 on my D28 though.
what is your main guitar you pair with your partners D28?

Location: Evansville,IN | I don't consider myself a guitar snob. I like just about everything, as long as it sounds and plays well. One of the sweetest sounding acoustics I've heard in a long time was a 1955 Martin. Played by the original owner. He plays at a lot of rest homes in the area, and was at my local guitar store trying out an acoustic amp. He says he bought the Martin in '55 for $70-80, he said he was for sure it was less than $100 brand new. I don't know what model it was, but it sounded great. :)

Location: SoCal | Hal, have you ever played either an older Adamas (not the CVT or SMT)? Real different animal from what's been on the shelves in the last few years.
Lotta great guitars out there. Some are Ovations (and that's the preference here), but there are a lot others as well. |

Location: SoCal | My main guitars are a 1983 1537 Elite, 1993 Adamas 1 12 string, and a 1983 Country Artist cutaway. I've also got a 1968/9 Glen Campbell Deluxe Balladeer, 2 Ovation solid body electrics from the 1970's and a few other odds and ends. And yes, I do own a Martin, a 1914 0018. Beautiful little nylon string.
I'm also on the list for an OFC guitar. |

As a new Ovation owner - even at the junior level, I have to agree. I have a 24 year old Matrix that sounds unbelievably sweet and full while un-plugged. I have a Larrivee D-2 I love, but I prefer the overall body of the Matrix even more. |

I have the newly up-dated Al Dimeola Custom Legend.
My partner's D-28 does not have a pick-up. When we play together plugged in he uses an Ovation 2005 Collectors. |
