i just got back from GC and played a 1778LX,
there was a 1mm gap where the fretboard lays on the soundboard, just south of the neck joint, on the bass side that was about 4-5mm long going alog side the FB.
basically, the FB wasn't touching the soudndboard
below the neck joint, and also at the very end of the FB where the frets narrow for just the top 2 strings.
is this a defect? or do they just not lay flat on the top on the ones without the center soundhole?

They "float" supposedly to let the top vibrate more freely. Don't buy it and screw it or glue it down like some we've seen.

what i was thinking about doing is shooting some epoxy in there with a syringe and standing on the front of the guitar for 12-24 hours.
then drill some hole in the side of that sucker and really let the sound move :p
maybe even slap a humbucker in it!
LOL

Do they do that on the 6778LX and any other Elites as well.

I thought it was true of all Elites, but I only have one. If Dave says it's normal, and he has more guitars than I've ever seen, then it must be on all Elites.

While Dave doesn't exactly fit most definitions of normal, he certainly knows it when he sees it. My 6778LX FB also floats ever so slightly.

It's normal that it floats. But it's also normal that it could be glued down. I'm not sure the rationale. I have both extremes. I have an elite 12 that you could store your drivers license under the fretboard. On my adamas u681 the fretboard appears totally and solidly glued to the top. And then all variations in between. My 6778LX has some gaps too. If you go th the Ovation website and look at the LX tour, then click on "photo gallery" and look at the last screen of photos...you'll see how the neck support block is set into the body of the guitar. How the fingerboard extention sits in relation to the top is not an important consideration in this new design.
