My first guitar was a 1976 Balladeer which is now slowly dying after many years of travelling and too much beach and sun. I love that guitar, but the top is cracking and the sound is not what it used to be. So I bought what I hope will be a worthy replacement. Kind of scary to buy a guitar online, but I found this one and was hoping for some feedback. They say it's a 1982, but according to the reference section on this site, it should be a 1979 (serial number 164735). I paid $279 plus $29 for shipping. Sound like a fair price? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I've purchased from this dealer before. They seem honest and fair to deal with.

Looks like a great grab.

The seller probably thought the blurb from the 1982 catalog meant it was a 1982. Looks like a nice Balladeer.

Welcome to the OFC BTW :)

I'm not an expert ... just some dude who loves Ovation guitars ... based on the pictures I saw, it looks like a very nice balladeer, and the price is very good too! It makes me wish that if I only had the money + approval from the wife for an addition in the household, I would've snagged it for myself! :D

Congratulations on your new guitar.

Peace,
Gil

Hey guys...thanks for all the positive feedback so far. As I said...I do love my trusty old 1976 Balladeer...she's like family. I'm happy to be able to buy another old classic. New guitars don't seem to have the same quality built in anymore. I have a 5 yr old Taylor 800 series...it sounds great, but I prefer playing my Ovation. Love the neck and the playability. I'll get the new one in about a week and will post results. Thanks again!

You might consider sending the ol'critter back to The Wizards at The Mothership, too.......

Yes seesquare...I thought about sending the ol'critter back, but with an estimate of $450, it made more sense to buy another that probably sat in a closet for 26 yrs! Plus, my old Balladeer was worped a bit at the top of the neck. Let's just say that I abused her when I was very young and didn't know any better...

I purchased a new Ovation Celebrity from them a couple of years ago and they were great to deal with. They were very price competitive and included lots of extras with the purchase.

That Balladeer looks real nice - Please give us an update when it arrives.

Got the guitar today...it looks beautiful...except it has a two inch crack on the top. It doesn't go thru all the way, but definitely a crack thru the gloss. Bummer. Otherwise, it's in perfect shape. I just sent an email to the guitarfactory and will post their response.

The Guitar Factory maintains they sent the guitar without a crack and so I have to contact UPS for a damage claim. The crack has grown to three inches. What a bummer. The guitar sounds good though and has a nice neck. Wondering if I should keep it.

You PAID for a new, undamaged guitar,
GET a new, undamaged guitar . . . .

Keep the cracked guitar for the interim and use the insurance money towards repair of your first love.

I would like to think that every time I kick in the extra $4-$10 for insurance that it will benefit someone else.

Drake, sorry for you about the crack. Hope you find a good solution. Is it really possible for UPS to mishandle the guitar so much as to make it crack - even when it is in its case ?

UPS is skilled in creating damage, think it is part of their mission statement.

And the official pronunciation of UPS is "oops".
