There nave been quite some comments (complaints) that the neck on the 2005 Collector felt too narrow compared to other Ovations. My new CBCLLX feels the same way. I don't mind it, but wondered why it was different. I measured it with a caliper and the nut measures the same as other Ovations. But check out this photo.

The photo is two guitars sitting nut-to-nut (shut up Cliff). The one on top is a 1982 Custom Legend and the one on the bottom is a 2005 Custom Legend. Look what's happening - they are cutting the string spacing narrower on the new ones. Leaves lots of extra room between the 1st or 6th strings and the edge of the fretboard. I measured the actual string spacing with the caliper and it confirmed what my eyes were telling me.

Could someone from the factory please comment if this is correct. And if so, why ?

heheehe, nut to nut,

I think the same is true for the FD-14 and the Uterus. The FD seems to have just a smidgeon more space between the strings.

If thats the case would a different nut fix it or would you have change saddles as well? Is the spacing on the bridge any different?

you could replace the nut and change the spacing ,the same is true with the saddle on the bridge

A comfortable spacing is the 1 3/4 neck with 1 1/2 string spacing, When they don't use the 1 11/16 std neck they should use this 1 3/4 w1,1/2string spacing. That's what I do if it was jet fuel, that makes sence don't it??

That's normal. This will explain it:

I believe the FD-14 has the wider standard Folklore neck???? That should explain that, if true.

A friend of mine has a late 90s Custom Legend and he complains about the 6th and 1st strings being too close to the edge of the fingerboard. Maybe this closer string spacing is to remedy that????

YOU READ MY MIND!!

I bought Jim's 05 he had in the classifieds and the strings are insanely close together..especially b and e. I can't do a c chord without buzzing on the high e. My Balladeer is perfect and feels wide compared to this thing.

I had another 05 I returned and it felt wider than this one. The e and b also sound a little dead on this one maybe a binding nut?..other strings sound great and actually sustains more than my original 05..though it is not as loud. Old and new strings too.

I also feel some inconsistincy in neck shape between 05's. This new one is definetly skinnier than the old.

If I can deal with string spacing this is still a killer guitar for a killer price.

CAN I GET THE NUT RECUT? Will this solve the problem?

Older folklore neck was 1-7/8. FD14 is 1-3/4.

Woody's post clarifies that my photo is a fraud. Nut to nut photo fails to take into account the variable pitch between the slots. But the issue remains why does the 2005 feel so cramped? Or am I just retaining water in my fingers.

I agree with Bill on the best compromise. My M-slothead has a 1-3/4 neck and 1-1/2 string width and it's the most perfect feeling instrument I've ever played.

UPDATE:

I just swapped nuts between the 05 and my S771. Boy is my S771 nut high! I also tried to space it out more at the saddle by hand.

Well..it's a tad better but not much. I still have to fight it not to buzz the high e when I do a c chord.

Even with the 05 nut on the S771 I have to work hard to MAKE it buzz on a C chord.

I don't understand.

Fret height? Neck profile? Probably the profile.

The s771 has such a fat neck the hand automatically sits straight on the neck but on the 05 it takes a lot of work to get into say that classical position where the fingers are straight up and down.

It is still real frustrating. I'm on vacation next week so maybe I'll bring the 2 guitars to a tech and see what he says.
